He told you he cared about you, knew your quirks and insecurities better than you ever did, and confided things in you that he had never told anyone. He introduced you to his closest friends, found time to hang out with you every day, and called you in the middle of the night just to ask what you were thinking about, but you couldn't get him to date you. The problem wasn't that he didn't care about you, know you, and think you were amazing, but that he couldn't commit to you the way he knew you deserved, so he let you go.
Whether an ex-girlfriend shattered his heart, or his parents got divorced early on and he grew up believing that there was no such thing as love, he was broken long before he met you; and whether you wanted to admit it or not, you knew this. He could have flat out told you that he didn't want anything serious, but you still secretly hoped that one day he would come around, just for you. Although this is a great idea in theory, the problem with trying to fix someone is that it is impossible, and no matter how hard we try, we can not repair the damage that someone else has caused.
You still get upset about him because you never actually got over it.You think about what you could have been, about the night it all ended, and what you could have done differently. You think about the night he first let you in, where you spent hours talking about your pasts. Your friends all tell you that he was a loser, that they don't understand what you still see in him, and that there are plenty of other fish in the sea. They say that he treated you like crap and you deserve better, and in some ways you agree, but they don't understand the butterflies you still feel in your stomach when he walks by or sends you a text. The same butterflies that he had teased you about long ago.
Although you know he's not the guy for you, a part of you still wishes he was. You talk to him every once in a while, but the conversations are not the same. You've dated a few guys here and there but somehow your mind always wanders to thoughts of him. Even though your relationship was far from perfect, you loved it for its flaws. Even though you know what happened was for the best, you will always remember the boy that you could not fix.
