The Best Parts Of Being In A Sorority

If being in a sorority is paying for my friends, I haven’t paid enough.

The Best Parts Of Being In A Sorority

Society can say all of the negative things about sorority women that it wants to. I would not trade my sisters for anything in the world. The bonds that I have with the women in my house are unbreakable and I cannot imagine my life without them. When joining a sorority my freshman year, I had no idea what to expect. I played sports all of high school and was never a girly-girl, which is what I just assumed everyone in a sorority was. Going through formal sorority recruitment, I had such a hard time narrowing down the houses I wanted to visit the next day because I genuinely loved them all and saw all of the great things that every chapter had to offer.

While I am so happy I am in the chapter I am now, I really love the Greek community and how each and every chapter on my campus gives back to our community. It is true when they call formal recruitment a "mutual selection process," because I picked my house in the end, just as much as they picked me. Joining a sorority has really given me many more opportunities than if I would just have been your average college student. Throughout my chapter, and all of Greek life, there are many opportunities to be had, both in leadership and just in general. Now that I have sorority sisters, I am never alone because I am in a sisterhood, and together we can make it through anything. I am thankful for all of the opportunities I have been given in my sorority and wish every women, either looking to join a sorority or already a member of one, the same.

These are three things that I believe are the best parts of being in a sorority:

Opportunities

Being a member of Greek life opens up so many opportunities for a person. Sorority life gives you opportunities to improve as a person, to improve your scholarship, and there are so many opportunities to improve your leadership skills. You can improve upon yourself as a women in your sorority by always striving to be better, more involved, and selfless. Scholarship is a very important aspect of Greek life, and we are always trying to improve both our personal GPAs as well as our chapter GPA. There are also many leadership opportunities when you are involved in a sorority, such as having a position as an officer, but there are many leadership opportunities also on your campus and in Greek life that would improve your skills as well.

Philanthropy

Giving back to the community that I am in is one of the top three reasons that I joined a sorority, and I feel the community service that I have participated in since joining my chapter has really influenced me in a positive manner. Through being in a sorority, I have had the opportunity to not only raise money for my sorority’s philanthropy, but also for other sororities and fraternities on campus. I believe that it is so important to give back to charities and different organizations, as well as just donating your time in your community, because we are so fortunate for everything we have so we should try to give back.

Sisterhood

Sisterhood is many wonderful things. It is a smile on a rainy day. It is a cheerful greeting on your way to your least favorite class. It is knowing that there will always be someone to eat with, someone to study with, or someone to go out on a Tuesday with. My sisters inspire me on a daily basis to constantly strive to make myself a better person. Being in a sorority is more than just parties and having fun, it is about finding your soul mates. In your sorority, you will find your bridesmaids and the people who really get you. My sisters encourage me in each and every way, and I hope everyone who joins a sorority has a similar experience.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
