Why Long Distance Is The Best And Worst Thing Ever

I will forever be counting down the minutes.

Why Long Distance Is The Best And Worst Thing Ever
Chloe McElmury

Going to college is a very important moment in most teenager’s lives. Everything changes. Many people think that going to college means breaking off their romantic relationships. I strongly think this is wrong. Yes, sometimes it works for the better in the end. However, just because you are hours and hundreds of miles away from each other doesn’t mean it has to be over. Many make long distance relationships work long term. There are many hardships during it, but some of your best moments will be made when you get to visit your best friend.

You get to always look forward to something.

You are always counting down the days until you get to see your partner. I have a countdown app that I check and it tells me when it’s three days before I see my boyfriend and when it is the time for the exact moment I’ll be seeing him. It’s a cute reminder and makes you all the more excited to see them because you see the days passing away. Even after you just see them, your countdown is already reset for the next time.

Sometimes you just really need them.

Your partner knows you better than anyone because they are your best friend. Sometimes, you need their hugs, kisses, or just their presence. They can be the only one to make you feel better or okay. It’s hard, and it’s okay to cry, but remember that they are still there for you even when they are so far away.

Everything is like new each time you see them.

Every time you see them is like the first time. It’s like you’ve never hugged or kissed them before, and that makes everything so much more exciting! You get nervous about what they’ll think of you, even though you already know. You get butterflies and can’t believe you still get like this after however long you have been dating.

You get mad about a lot of little things.

They're gone for hours and didn't say were they were going. You stay up late to FaceTime and they end up canceling. Even the way they text can start to drive you insane. You send too many texts and they don't respond to everything. You know it'd be completely different if you were always having a conversation in person. This is what makes face to face conversations even more worth it.

You have a lot of trust.

At least you should! Being long distance requires a lot of trust. The other person could be lying or cheating on you, and you would probably never find out. Hopefully that's not the case; I don't mean to frighten any of you! You build up a lot of trust, and you know once the distance is over, you will have a rock solid foundation for your relationship.

You can be a different person on and off line.

It's so much easier to express thoughts that you're too scared to say in a text message. You shouldn't be afraid to say anything to your partner, but this can still be a bad thing. I find that it's a lot easier to be annoying and clingy through the phone. This can bother your partner and although they always want to talk to you, this can make them not want to. Things can even just get weird and something you say might come off different in a text than if you were to say it in person.

You're more grateful of little moments and everyday things other couples take for granted.

The littlest things mean the most to you and your partner. Things like being able to wake up next to them, holding their hand, and even just having a conversation in person mean the world to you. You cherish every weekend spent together or FaceTime date. When you hear other couples complain they can't go a week without their partner, you want to challenge them to being without your best friend for months. Every memory is memorable for you, and you want to hold onto those forever.

Being without and missing them.

They're your best friend and you want to spend 24/7 with them. You always want to tell them things or be with them. You go somewhere and wish they were with you. You see a movie and know they would love it. Even just laying in bed at night, you grow lonely wanting them to be next to you. You miss them, plain and simple. It's like a part of you is existing somewhere else, separated from the rest of you.

You know you wouldn't want it any other way.

You know that the only other alternative is being without them and you would never let that happen. Even through all of the tears, fights, and missing them, it is all worth it. You dream for the day you can wake up next to them every single morning and officially start your lives together in the same place. The dreams of the future keep you going and eventually that day will come.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
