If you know me, even if we've only met once, you probably know that I love Childish Gambino. When I love someone, especially an artist or band, I literally can't go three sentences without mentioning them. I do this because when I find something I'm into I want to share it with someone, so they can love it too. So I'm going to tell you, reader, everything you need to know to begin your obsession, er I mean love, of Childish Gambino.
Who is Childish Gambino?
"Childish Gambino" is the stage name for Donald Glover. He actually picked the name "Childish Gambino" by using the Wu-Tang Clan name generator. Who's Donald Glover? He is an extremely talented 32-year-old writer, actor, comedian and rapper. He has written for shows like 30 Rock, acted in shows and movies such as Community and Magic Mike XXL. He also has a stand up comedy show called "Weirdo," which is on Netflix. I've watched it almost ten times. It's fine, everything's fine. Finally, he is a rapper who's unique style, emotional, catchy and sometimes comedic lyrics has definitely attracted a huge following.
Now enough talking about him, let's actually listen:
The Basics:
Heartbeat
Laughing out loud at the fact that the title says "DIRTY" but no one likes the censored version of songs, it takes away the magic, that's a fact. "Heartbeat" is the first Childish Gambino song I listened to and now I'm writing a whole article based on my love of Gambino, so pretty good song.
Ya'll, look how strangely beautiful this music video is! He chauffeurs her around, they park *wink*, and they she chauffeurs them home. Dream date.
3005
"3005" is another Childish Gambino fan staple. If you know these two songs you can basically fake your way through a conversation about Childish Gambino. Just don't try this trick when your talking to an actual fan of Childish Gambino, we'll know. God, let me not sound like a 13-year-old girl that runs a fan account on Instagram.
Sweatpants
Seriously the most catchy, quotable song.
Telegraph Ave
I included this song mainly because of the music video. Donald Glover always does an amazing job at creating these unique, strange, eerie and captivating music videos. When I first heard this song, I liked it, it wasn't my favorite, but after I saw the music video, I had a whole new appreciation for the song. His music videos are often nothing what you would expect they would be when listening to the song. Which personally makes me think deeper into the song, and realize somethings I didn't hear the first time I listened to it.
Freaks and Geeks
Word play on point. This song has word play that even your cross word puzzle doing father would appreciate.
Now that we've covered the Basics, let's get a little deeper:
Break (All of the Lights)
Now that you've listen to Childish Gambino staples, some classics, I think it's time to get into some lesser known, earlier songs, that are truly amazing and extremely underrated. Donald did a cover of "All of the Lights" by Kanye West but did it in a way that I've never heard before. Instead of just singing the song, he created this beautiful masterpiece that touches on race issues, mental health, and overall is this genuinely sung vent sesh.
These Girls
So this isn't normally what you think of when you Childish Gambino, but it should be because this man is dynamic! He can literally go from this really aggressive rap, to a rap that lyrics are heartbreaking, to this beautifully sung song about girls and love. *sobbing*
So Fly
Okay, so this song is the sweetest. Dreaming of a day when someone I'm dating says "you're so fly" *swoon*
*** notice the lyric "you are the bestest, I will obey you"
Be Alone
Y'all he literally wrote a break up song about the girl from the song above, "So Fly". Notice the lyric " You are are the bestest, I will obey you, these words I wrote for you when you were f-ckin' other dudes." The circle of life, amirite?
The Longest Text Message
Here's another vulnerable, vent session style, emotional song. I love that he uses music as basically a diary and sings about his true feelings and the things he's been through. I know, I know a lot of musicians do this, but Donald does it in a way that is so raw, and real. *turns on Gambino* *Starts crying about Ex*
You See Me
*Turn volume as loud as it will go to get full affect* This is th song I always listen to while I'm getting ready. It doesn't matter if I'm getting ready for school or going out on a Friday night. This song literally will pump you up for anything.
So by the time you get here you should literally be obsessed with Childish. He is so so talented. I'm in awe. Ok, let me calm down, I'm not his mother. Seriously, though. No matter what mood you're in there is a Gambino song that will match it. His style is so dynamic and original that there is something for everyone. So, now that you know where to start, listen and look of even more songs. Let the obsession begin, my friends!
