During my first semester of college, I had a lot of fun with my friends, learned and excelled so much in my classes, and enjoyed the feel of the new campus I'd be on for the next four years. On the other hand, I felt like something was missing. I wasn't really involved in any extracurriculars or clubs. To have the full college experience, I thought that was necessary. Plus, joining a club would help me make a ton of new friends, and I would be trying something new. It seemed like a win-win.
Over winter break, I saw a post on Facebook regarding the Women's Rugby club team here at UAlbany. At first, I thought to myself hell no, this is not for me. The post emphasized that no prior experience was necessary to play and the team would teach you everything you need to know. This drew me in a little bit closer. I watched their recruitment video on YouTube, and that's what did it for me. The girls looked so happy, full of energy and like they were having the time of their lives playing rugby, a sport that isn't really common. I played softball all throughout high school, and I missed going to practices every day and being on the field. Since there was no club softball team, maybe trying rugby would be a good option. Plus, running into and tackling people sounded like a whole lot of fun.
When I showed up to the first practice I felt nervous, unprepared and intimidated quite honestly. I thought I wasn't going to be fast enough, strong enough, or have any stamina. However, I noticed that the girls were all at different levels and all had different body types, and that made me feel better. The first practice hit me like a truck because we ran up and down 22 flights of stairs twice. I couldn't walk for three days, but it was a good kind of pain. I knew I was in for something good that would help me get the right kind of exercise I needed.
As the next month went on, I started getting used to working out every day and got to know the girls better. I was shy in the beginning but I came out of my shell. We went 100% hard during practice and it was rough for me. There were times where I just wanted to stop because it was tough and felt like I couldn't do it anymore. This is where I need to thank my teammates because they are the most welcoming and motivational group of women I have ever met in my life. When I felt like I couldn't keep going, they kept me going. They helped me push through all of our workouts and continue to do so. They are always there to help out when I am confused about the game. I have so much fun with them all while learning a new sport and getting into shape. Although I have only been on the team for two months, I feel like I am a part of the rugby fam, and I've seen a huge improvement in myself. There is no place I'd rather be!
Joining rugby has helped me in so many ways. I can't wait to see what's in store throughout the rest of my college career on the team. Trying something new can help you in plenty of ways you didn't even think were possible, so take the opportunity and jump in!
