Each year, sports fans get to experience the greatest month in sports: March Madness. For several months, most of us have been watching games several times a week and have seen blowouts, upsets, and buzzer beaters. We have seen disappointments and surprises. The beauty in college sports is how on any given night, any team could beat the other.
We get to experience the highs and lows a few times a season, but nothing compares to March Madness. Beginning in the first round, there are multiple games each night. As a basketball fan, I honestly cannot think of anything better.
There are experts that study all year to give their predictions on how the tourney will play out. No one gets them completely right, but many times they can get pretty close. Generally, there are some upsets throughout the beginning, but most of the time, the teams that are expected to be in the final four and championship make it there. This year however, there have been several surprises and teams to make it that never have before.
From the beginning, there were a lot of close games. Teams that were predicted to roll struggled in the first round. Some won, but some lost. The way the tourney is set up is that there are 4 1 seeds, 4 2 seeds, and so on all the way to 16. The teams play in a single elimination, bracket style tourney. This year, the first round saw a lot of games come down to the wire. There were teams that should have blown others away that didn’t. This trend continued on throughout the rest of the tourney. Even now, there are some teams that should win in the final 4, but we could see some crazy results.
One of the teams that is in the final 4 has not been there since the 30’s. Another has never been in the history of the school. The other final 4 misfit has not even won a tournament game since the 70’s. Hundreds of teams have won a game between then and now. This year, teams that absolutely should not have won and made it as far as they did, did. No one could have no one could have predicted the way things have turned out. As a college basketball fan, this is one tournament that I will remember for years.
