Fashion for Feminists: 11 Feminist T-Shirts You Need in Your Closet
Daisy Natives

In the past few years, it seems as if feminism has entered the main stream. Celebrities, male and female alike, are often asked "Do you consider yourself a feminist?" and many stores like H&M sell feminist themed apparel with sayings such as "pizza roles not gender roles" or "fries before guys" emblazoned on the front. While feminism becoming a more widely accepted ideal is certainly beneficial, it can be exasperating to see companies making a profit off of feminism when similar capitalist structures are responsible for exploiting women and other marginalized groups. Seeing a nuanced movement reduced to cheesy sayings like the above can be equally frustrating. As someone with a great love of t-shirts, I sought out more ethical and less tacky alternatives for my feminist t-shirt needs and for what is certainly not the first time, Etsy answered my prayers. Because Etsy products are from independent sellers, your purchases will help to support small businesses and allow you to wear your feminist beliefs on your sleeve while putting them into action.

1. "The Future is Female" tee: $10.99

This quote is originally attributed to Sally Miller Gearhart's 1981 essay entitled "The Future—if there is one—is Female" and can now be purchased on this t-shirt that you can even afford on a college student budget.

2. "Girls Support Girls" tee: $26

While this t-shirt isn't from an Etsy seller, Daisy Natives is an independent, woman-owned shop with a whole bunch of other adorable t-shirts. While this one is a bit on the pricier side, I love the font and the pink and red together! This shirt is also offered in white.

3. "Raise Boys and Girls the Same Way" tee: $18.95

One of my favorite and the most popular Jenny Holzer truisms now available on a t-shirt and a crop top.

4. "ERA YES" tee: $22.00

The ERA, equal rights amendment, was a proposed amendment to the Constitution first introduced to Congress in 1923 and passed in both houses in 1972 that would have guaranteed equal rights for women. While the fact that the ERA passed in 1972 is considered feminist common knowledge, many people don't know that it was never ratified by all 50 states, or the 35 needed to make it a part of the Constitution. So close to 100 years after its introduction, there is still no constitutional basis for equal rights for women. Voice your opposition to the idea that the fight for women's rights are a legislative reality by sporting this t-shirt.

5. "Pit Hair Don't Care" tee: $13.00

While growing out your body hair isn't inherently feminist, taking agency over your body hair is. Combat the stereotype of the "hairy, man-hating feminist" with this shirt that says "So what if I'm hairy? Women still deserve equal treatment."

6. "Girls Can Do Anything" tee: $22.00

Hell yeah we can, especially with this t-shirt in our wardrobe.

7. "Girls Just Wanna Have Fundamental Rights" tee: $26.00

Adorable wordplay on Cyndi Lauper's 1983 jam, now available as t-shirt from this Etsy store.

8."Aa is for Audre Lorde" tee: $30.00

Aude Lorde was one of the most prominent feminist and civil rights activists and a self-described "warrior." This shirt also comes in other colors, on tote bags, and with other feminist icons such as Simone de Beauvoir!

9. "Girls Invented Punk Rock Not England" tee: $18.49

As worn by Kim Gordon, now available on Etsy.

10. "Don't Tell Me to Smile" tee: $20.00

Because women don't always have to be happy and agreeable, especially when random men on the street tell us to. Available here .

11. "Don't Tell Me to Smile" tee, angry bear edition: $22.00

Like the shirt above, but with an angry bear for good measure.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
