I recently found this new app called Duolingo that helps people learn a new language through a daily routine. You download the app onto your phone or tablet and then sign up and create your account. This app has 11 completed language courses, two beta languages, and eight languages that are still being formed on the app. English natives and people that are native to other languages can use the application in order to learn a new language. I am beginning to use this app to learn Spanish and at first the application gave me a test to see how much Spanish I already know. Here are four reasons why I think other college students should start to use this app as well.
1. Easy to use.
The app holds verbal and nonverbal questions. The quizzes and lessons that you take throughout the app only take five to ten minutes of your day. Each day a person can further their understanding of another language easily without having to even move. If you want, you can wait until you are comfortable in bed before you go to sleep and go through your daily lessons. Lately, I have found myself sometimes working on the app while I do my homework and some days I do more than one lesson at a time just to get ahead in my lessons. You are allowed to go at your own pace, choosing the amount of time you spend on the app and your daily intake of information. The app will send you reminders so that you can keep up with the pace of your goal depending on what your goal is. The app provides all the resources you will need, and the only thing you have to do is stay committed to actually going on the app and doing the lessons.
2. Can help in the future.
So many job opportunities will open up for a person that knows multiple languages. A lot of business deals in the United States are done with other foreign countries, but not many actually know how to speak more than their native tongue. So many jobs in the United States also receive foreign customers that might be able to speak a little English, but not fluent English. Transactions run more smoothly when a customer feels more comfortable communicating with employees. As the world evolves more and more, there will be even more opportunities opened for people that are multi-lingual. If a student graduates from college knowing multiple languages, they can get a job based off the languages they know alone. Or a student might have a better chance at getting a job in their major because they know another language.
3. The app is free.
Even if you download the app and it does not help you learn another language, there is no money lost. I feel the app is worth a try since there is no payment fee and there is an opportunity to expand your knowledge. There are always open doorways to the things that people have to pay for, but rarely any shouts or yells about the things that are free. There are so many open job opportunities for multilingual people, like I said before, and here is a free path leading to them. College students have to buy tuition, books, dues for clubs, etc. Those days when you do not want to eat in the cafeteria at your school, you have to buy food from restaurants or in your college's student center. This app is something that will help fill you with more knowledge for no price.
4. Mobile.
There are so many places this app can be used other than just at home or in your dorm, and you are not confined to sitting in a classroom. While you are in the car, if you are not driving of course, or waiting in a line while doing your homework, etc. Because the app is so mobile, there are more opportunities for a person to complete lessons and little excuse for not staying committed. During times where you might have to wait for a long time, there is an open chance to practice. In between classes, during breakfast, lunch, or dinner, or before you go to bed there are numerous amount of opportunities to be active in your lessons. College students always have something they are running around having to do because of classes or different activity involvement around campus, and this app's mobility can easily fit into a college student's schedule.
