The ABCs of Ohio State

Things every OSU student knows to be true.

The ABCs of Ohio State
u.osu.edu

This past weekend Buckeyes traveled near and far to make it back to campus. The streets filled with pride and spirit oozing from everyone and it's not going anywhere anytime soon. Ohio State is truly one of the most special colleges in the would, filled with tradition, honor, and excellence. People don't truly understand what being a Buckeye means until they become a Buckeye. When you come to campus, you're doing something much more than attending college; You are becoming part of a family. Every family has their quirks that set them apart from others and here are ours!

A is for Afro Duck

Our beloved Afro Duck (rest in peace) was our most famous unofficial campus mascot. He hated *ichigan so much, he jumped in the lake every single day of the year. While Afro Duck 2.0 has made an appearance at Mirror Lake and is fulfilling his duties, no one will ever understand the heartache we felt losing our favorite little crazy-haired Buckeye.

B is for Brutus
Oh, Brutus, our beloved mascot. Whether you spot him on the football field, hopping in your car as you ride across campus, or showing up before a final, he never fails to put a smile on your face. Brutus is always all over campus, and we can always count on him to pump us up. He is our biggest fan, and we are his! We're nuts about you, Brutus!

C is for Carmen
You're not quite sure how you learned the words, but you know you'll never be able to forget them. It is impossible for your to hear "Carmen Ohio" without getting chills down your spine. There is something special about wrapping your arms around fellow Buckeyes and singing the Alma Mater. "Time and change will surely show, how firm thy friendship..."

D is for Donuts

Buckeye Donuts is love. Buckeye Donuts is life. Once you taste a Buckeye Donut, no other donut shop can compare. Sober or not, at 1:00 AM or 1:00 PM, you can't help but get a craving every time you pass this little donut joint. Don't let it's underrated appearance fool you, this place is legit. It's pretty much heaven on Earth.

E is for Education
Buckeyes may know how to have a good time, but we also know why we came to this school. We pride ourselves on receiving the best education possible and will always put our academics first. Looks like we put a lot of work into our game day outfits? We put five times that more work in the classroom.

F is for Face Tattoos
Is it really game day if every girl you pass doesn't have a Block O or Brutus temporary tattoo on her face? Face tattoos are a must have for every game day outfit. Every time you walk into a store, they are always there to purchase.

G is for Game Day

Your favorite day of the entire year (well, days of the year)! It doesn't matter if it's a noon game or a night game, you'll be up by 8:00 AM tailgating. You'll attend the skull session, get to the game early to sneak into better seats, and cheer so loud that you won't have a voice until the next Saturday. You may be stumbling out of the stadium, but we all know you're stumbling to the bar immediately after. People come from all over the country and deck themselves out in scarlet and grey for your team. Even when there is an away game, the campus is flooded with Scarlet and Grey. OH-!

H is for High Street
High Street is indescribable. During the day, is filled with students rushing to get their morning Starbucks and others dragging their feet to class. At night, it's pretty much Wonderland. There's nothing that you won't see on High Street at night. From Big Bar to Bullwinkle's, you know you're in for a drunken treat wondering down High Street at night. Plus, we all know our inner 7th grader laughs when we think about the fact that it's called "High" Street.

I is for Dotting the "I"
TBDBITL brings many traditions to life, but this is my favorite. As if we don't get excited enough at the first sight of the band, we go absolutely nuts for Script Ohio. In case Script Ohio wasn't enough, dotting that "I", that final touch for the perfect picture, makes us impossible to tame! The lucky sousaphone player is the most loved person in The Shoe that day. I still get chills every time I see the strut to the top of the I and watch him or her bow. This shows how one person can make all the difference!

J is for Jeni's

Do you really go to OSU if you haven't heard of Jeni's ice cream? By the end of your first day on campus, you've already heard people rave about it at least 100 times. With delicious classics such as Milk Chocolate to unique flavors like Goat Cheese with Cherries, there is always something new to try that never disappoints. Jeni's is a Columbus staple, and you get almost shed a tear every time you can get a free sample.

K is for Kennedy
Whether you're a freshman or a super senior, you have fond memories of Kennedy. Before Scott came to North campus, students would travel near and far to get to eat this five-star restaurant (or so it seemed) on South campus. NoCo and Morril Traditions weren't even close to the prestige of Kennedy food. While Kennedy is trailing behind the new hot spots, Kennedy was always there for us when needed comfort food and will always hold a special place in our hearts.

L is for Library
We all have a library preference and get a little territorial when it gets overcrowded. It may be Thompson, 18th Avenue Library (SEL), or one of the lesser known options, but each location definitely has its benefits. We know the ins and outs of our preferred option, and have our absolute favorite place to sit at each location. At some point every year, you begin to wonder why you even pay for housing when you practically live in at the library. Admit it, you've even napped in the library at least once. We're all thankful for having such incredible libraries to work in.

M Does Not Exist

No explanation necessary here.

N is for #new2osu
Ah, our favorite hashtag. Every year OSU attempts to engrave this hashtag into the brains of the new freshmen to use to share their adventures on campus. Let's be honest, this has turned into every upperclassman's favorite ongoing joke. Any time we see something slightly odd or a classic freshman action, we make sure to tweet it with #new2osu. Don't worry, it's all in good fun!

O is for the Oval
The center of campus and our favorite green hang out is known as the oval. Whether you want to study, lay out and tan, play with puppies, or collect flyers from every organization on campus, the Oval is the place for you! We can hang out with our favorite Oval Squirrels; We can admire the beauty of a snow-covered campus; We can take the long walk down the center with our true love. There is always excitement on the Oval and we love it for that. We love it so much that OSU even made a smaller version a block South!

P is for Parties

Work hard, play harder. OSU definitely knows how to party. Practically every night of the week you can find a party east of High Street. Whether you're looking for a small kickback or a wild rave straight out of a movie, you can find it at OSU. Remember, we're The Ohio State University for a reason. We're the place to be, day or night. Good luck surviving game day pre-games, and don't even make plans for the next week after a post-win party.

Q is for Quiet
While it seems nearly impossible, quiet places do exist (at least at certain times). Low key nights on campus are an absolute blessing. When you go to a school with over 55,000 other people, it's hard to find quiet time. Absolute silence on The Oval on a weeknight at 3:00 AM is a thing of beauty. Sometimes you even go to the top floor of Thompson library to finally find some absolute silence (because even 95% of our libraries aren't actually quiet). Silence is beautiful, and you have a new perspective on it after attending OSU.

R is for RPAC
The RPAC is one of the best perks as an OSU student. This is a top notch gym, complete with four levels, three pools, two saunas, racquetball courts, badminton courts, far too many basketball courts to count, a track, every workout machine you could need. It is so nice, it makes us feel guilty for not working out. Whether you're a beginner or a pro, working out is so easy and comfortable here. This gym is an entire reason itself to attend Ohio State.

S is for the Shoe

If you try to talk about The Shoe to someone from another school, they'll like get confused and question why you're so excited to go look at new sneakers on Saturday. The Shoe is a magical place and arguably one of the best college stadiums in the country, whether it is because of the physical stadium or for the heart and soul in it). Anytime you actually get to walk across that turf, it's truly an honor. No matter how many times you step onto the field, your heart flutters from the excitement. So many memories are made here and they are memories you'll never forget. From your freshman Buckeye Kickoff, to games, to the final walk at graduation, that feeling magic never fades.

T is for Tradition
Traditions have so many meanings at OSU (and I'm not talking about the place where you get semi-edible food on a meal plan). There are so many OSU traditions that I can't name them all. You can learn a new tradition constantly on campus: Rubbing Thompson's head, singing Carmen Ohio, the long walk, or just talking the O-H-I-O picture with your three roommates. Every time you partake in just responding with I-O, you're carrying on a legacy. You're a part of a community worldwide of people who value these traditions as much as you.

U is for Union
It didn't seem right to leave the Union out of this. The Ohio Union is the hub of campus life, complete with study areas, social rooms, offices, and dining locations. In fact, the only full service restaurant students can use their meal plan at is here. It has the ability to transform into whatever you need to it be. The Union is the go-to place to meet up, the place of unlimited campus resources, and the infamous Brutus statue.

V is for Victory Bell
The sweet, sweet sound of victory is something we know well here. After every football win, Columbus can hear that beautiful ring for 15 minutes. To be honest, it gets hard to hear the chimes over the screams and excitement of the Buckeye community after a win, but we know it's there. It's more than just a bell, it's a tradition that dates back to 1954. Shout out to Alpha Phi Omega, because we're all jealous that you have the honor of ringing it!

W is for Welcome Week

Not to toot our own horn, but OSU truly has the best welcome week. You never have to worry about being bored during that first week. From concerts such as Big Sean and Kesha completely filling up the South Oval, to the involvement fair, to all the free swag from Buck-i-Frenzy, we have it all. Honestly, you don't need to buy food for the first week because you can always find a free meal. The unofficial welcome week parties that are legendary themselves too

X is for the X's on our hands
Ah, the black sharpie X's we have all experienced on our hands at one point or another. The sign to prove you're just a baby Buckeye (or don't have a fake). Don't get me wrong though, that doesn't mean you didn't find someone to buy you drinks anyways. Those faded X's would stay on your hands for days (probably until you went out again and got another set).

Y is for You
This is going to sound cheesier than Scott Mac and Cheese, but it is definitely necessary to put in here. You go to OS(You). While it is easy to get wrapped up in school spirit and Buckeye family, it is important to remember that everyone at Ohio State has a different experience. Ohio State molds to fit you! You belong here! This campus is welcoming of every single person (even people from that state up North)! No matter what you're interested in who where you're going in life, there are plenty of people here who are similar to you. The absolute best thing about this campus is that everyone can find where they belong here.

Z is for Zeke

"Zeeeekkkkkeeeee!" Our favorite running back who left us too soon. We all went crazy for his signature crop top (that he got banned from the NCAA) because, look at those abs! Elliot quickly won over our hearts during our 2014 season and has become loved ever since. We all felt a little heartbroken and betrayed when he said he was leaving us, but we love him for what he did here; Once a Buckeye, always a Buckeye! Zeke, we'll miss chanting your name in the stands and watching you pull off nearly impossible plays, but we still love you.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
