The 10 Most Useful Things To Bring To College

Beware: your roommate (and friends) will be asking to borrow all of these.

Let me just say, I am only in my first month of my college career, but I think that it's enough time to know what I use a lot and what I don't use at all.

When packing for college, I was on Pinterest 24/7 trying to find a list of things I actually needed for college. I found many lists, but most of them had over 100 things on them and I really just wanted to know the things that most people don't think to bring. This list is something I wish I had about a month ago.

1. Step stool

I’m a short girl and getting up on my bed is a struggle. This saves me from having to get a running start and making a fool of myself. I also am able to use the extra storage in my dorm that is a foot too high for my reach.

2. Calendar

Get one that you can hang up in your room. It’s nice to see your month all laid out because it’s easy to lose track of the days and all of the activities you have going on. Trust me, you'll be very busy.

3. Mini vacuum

Girls living in a room equals hair everywhere. It's really disgusting when you have to clean off your feet before climbing into bed. Just spend the little extra money for something you will not regret buying. Also, the pretty carpet you bought to make your room look great gets dirty very easily.

4. Portable phone charger

You aren’t always near a wall where you can plug in a charger. Sometimes you forget to charge your phone at night. I know we've all been there. Just get one now and you'll be happy you did.

5. Mini make-up mirror

Perfect for when you don’t want to walk to the community bathroom or when you need to get ready quickly. The one I bought has a light that I can turn on when getting ready for bed after my roommate is asleep. It's very multi-functional.

6. Back pillow

Perfect for when you want to watch Netflix on your bed or if you decide to do homework on your bed. It also makes a very comfy pillow for naps.

7. Paper plates (bowls, silverware)

Who actually wants to wash the real stuff in your tiny bathroom sinks?

8. Mini fan

Dorm rooms are hot, especially after walking in the 90-degree heat back to your room.

9. Nail polish

Most people forget this, but you probably won’t know where a nail salon is for a while and you can’t always guarantee an appointment last minute. When you're in a pinch, a class color can save the day.

10. Drying rack

You won’t (or shouldn’t) dry all of your clothes in the dryers. If my mom taught me anything, it's that those nicer clothes shouldn't be thrown in the dryer. A drying rack is compact and saves you from accidentally shrinking or ruining your nice clothes.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
