School's out and summer is here, so you know what that means: it's time for that exciting annual adventure with the whole family. "Adventure" is the key word here, because you know how crazy a family vacation can get. Of all the fun memories made throughout your trip, these are 10 moments that deserve a spot on the highlight reel:
1. Decreasing your use of social media
Perhaps you're only doing it to avoid hearing "get off your phone!" from your parents, but you have to admit that it's nice to disconnect a little and enjoy actual conversation.
2. Taking cute group photos at amazing destinations
Showing off your nice outfits while striking a hilarious pose will never get old. Added bonus: family pics usually make for great cover photos!
3. Bonding with your sibling(s)
Vacations seem to cast a magical spell that eliminates all the normal bickering and irritation that you normally experience with your siblings at home. It's almost like you become friends or something.
4. Shopping for cute souvenirs
Not sure which part is better: bringing home a token to remember your vacation, or Mom and Dad footing the bill.
5. Agreeing on anything without an argument
It's equivalent to witnessing a miracle.
6. Trying crazy new things together
No one will ever forget the time Grandpa agreed to parasail or Mom went flying on an ATV.
7. Eating meals at the dinner table
Whether you stay in to cook or go out to a restaurant, some of the best memories from a vacation come from gathering everyone around the table to share some great food.
8. Creating new inside jokes throughout the vacation
Every Christmas party and family wedding becomes an opportunity to relive that hilarious moment that no one else will understand.
9. Family game night!
Who doesn't like a little friendly competition?
10. Spending quality time with your family
With school keeping you apart for 8 months out of the year, the time spent with your family becomes especially valuable. Don't take these memories for granted!
Of course, we all know that no family vacation occurs without occasional (or maybe constant) speed bumps. These are the 10 moments that we could all probably do without on a family getaway:
1. Packing
It shouldn't be called "packing." It should be called "deconstructing your entire closet only to realize you don't like 80% of your clothes."
2. Surviving the airport
By the time you all get through airport security, you're already over it.
3. Or piling everyone into the car
If someone says, "Are we there yet?" one more time, you might explode.
4. Unloading everything into a cramped hotel room
Hooray for hauling all that luggage to the umpteenth floor and sharing 1 bathroom with (at least) 3 other people.
5. Stopping every 5 feet for a photo
There's no escaping Mom's camera. When she wants a picture (which is always), she gets a picture. At least you can bank on getting a shot of her passed out on a bus ride for payback.
6. Choosing activities
Good luck compromising when half the family wants to go mountain hiking while the other half just wants to sit by the pool.
7. Deciding on where to go for dinner
Everyone is starving and cranky, but no one wants the responsibility of choosing the restaurant. Perfect.
8. Or worse: grocery shopping
Caution: picky eaters and shopping on an empty stomach WILL exasperate you further during this patience-testing endeavor.
9. Family game night.
If your family is anything like mine, you know that "a little friendly competition" can get way out of hand without warning.
10. Reminding yourself to stay calm and be patient, because after all, they are family
No family vacation goes off without a hitch. Before you boil over because your sister is hogging the bathroom or your grandparents didn't hear what you said for the 10th time in a row, take a deep breath and consider this: the people in this room who are driving you crazy are the people that love you the most. Treasure every moment you get to spend with them, because you never know how much time you have left. What's more, not everyone out there has the opportunity to go on vacations with their families, or a family to vacation with. Stay upbeat during your family travels, and you'll find that a good attitude goes a long way.
