Raven-Symone is arguably one of the most controversial hosts in the history of The View. Currently, there is a petition going around on the net trying to disbar her from the morning talk show’s table. The online petition on Change.org has gathered over 120,00 signatures. It states that “African-Americans and Black people around the diaspora need a voice representative of their views and not a voice representative of what white people want us to say.” Raven-Symone can’t provide that.
This petition comes in the wake of two of many controversial situations where The View co-host made "insightful" comments on matters of race. For instance, in a recently aired episode of The View, during table discussion, the former child star proudly claimed she wouldn’t hire someone with a “Black” name regardless if they were qualified. The comment was so outlandish that her fellow panelist had to call her out for her discriminatory attitude. In fact, many viewers believed that Raven was exhibiting internalized racism.
Recently in an Ebony published article, Jamilah Lemieux writes, "Her name is Raven hyphen alternate spelling of 'Simone,' complete with what could be considered a gratuitous accent mark ... and yet she feels compelled to punch down at those who also have names that are also Black as a dice game at a church fish fry, but may not have hit the faux French mark as well as her own."
However it’s not surprising that Raven makes these comments, especially when young people her age declare themselves post-racism and denounce racism, yet harbor stigmas that reinforce institutionalized racism and prejudice.
In a recent controversy, Raven was slammed for her comment about the viral Spring Valley High School assault and arrest in Columbia, SC. During a panel discussion the actress and co-host made a reference that the high school teen (who was African-American) didn’t deserve to be assaulted by the police officer (who was White), however, the teen shouldn’t have disobeyed school rules. In the wake of her comment, many viewers thought that she was stating that the actions of the police officer was warranted due to the fact the teen was being “disruptive”.
Surprisingly, these two situations are not the first time the public had a problem with Raven-Symone’s commentary. For instance, America was outraged when she defended Univision host Rodner Figueroa after he said that the First Lady Michelle Obama looked like an Ape. Raven’s defense was that some people look like animals. In fact, the biggest racial incident was when she appeared on a previously recorded "Where Are They Now" Oprah segment and claimed she was not Africa- American but, indeed, just American. Many people believe that Raven is trying to disregard her race, a race which has successfully helped her rise to stardom as an Africa- American actress on "The Cosby Show" and "That's So Raven."

However, the public cannot make assumptions on why Raven feels the needs to throw herself under the bus as a traitor of her own racial identity. But it isn’t too farfetched to believe that she will be the face of many racial controversies in the future.
