When people mention the holidays we think of Christmas or New Years. But what about Thanksgiving? It seems to be one of the most underrated holidays. We jump right from everything Halloween to Christmas music. Thanksgiving always gets left in the dust. But why is Thanksgiving so great?
First off, Thanksgiving is many college students' first real food in weeks, month even. Your body is so crammed full of processed food, and ramen, that it's begun shutting down. Then Thanksgiving comes around and you're surrounded by more home cooked food that you can process. It's a holiday based completely around eating food. You also eat on Christmas, but you have to go out, buy gifts, make sure that you got everyone something, and stress about money. Thanksgiving, on the other hand, is all about eating. You just show up with a couple dishes and shovel your face full of food until you feel sick. If you eat like that on any of the other 364 days of the year people would probably look at you with disgust, but not on Thanksgiving. It's the ultimate cheat day. Eat whatever you want! You might have been dieting on Wednesday, but not anymore. Vegetarians are cramming turkey on their plates and not a single person is judging you. Do you want to know why? It's because they are all busy stuffing their faces with food too.
You can sit and eat a nice dinner with family who you barely know and it doesn't matter because, at that moment, you all have one thing in common: food. You all want to get full so that you can sit and watch football until someone brings out the desserts. Have you seen Thanksgiving desserts? You could probably change the holiday to "Oh my gosh look at all those pies!" day. All of these things make Thanksgiving great, but there is one thing that puts Thanksgiving above all the other holidays: leftovers. Thanksgiving dinner is the gift that just keeps on giving. It's days of mashed potatoes, stuffing, and turkey sandwiches. Bring some back to school with you, maybe you can make it last until winter break comes. But the holiday doesn't end when the food does, because then comes Black Friday. Directly after a holiday about being thankful we go out and buy ourselves a ton of stuff that we don't need. All that aside though, Black Friday is the the most fun that you can have in the midst of utter chaos. Hundreds of people groggy from over eating are trying to navigate a store packed well beyond what's probably safe. Thanksgiving is truly a holiday to be thankful for food, friends, family, football, and of course leftovers. So lets hold off on that Christmas music a little bit longer and enjoy Thanksgiving, the best holiday.
