10 Comments Your Nosy Relative Will Make About Your Weight This Thanksgiving, And The Clapback To Match

It's officially the time of year that I dread — Thanksgiving. I'm very happy to be going home and seeing my mom and brother, but when I have to go visit with my extended family, things can get a bit hectic. We'll all be sitting around the table enjoying good food and catching up when that one relative always has to ask about someone's weight and typically it's the person who has been off at college.

Last year, I was on the receiving end of a lot of the weight-gain chatter, so this year I've decided that for my own sanity and for everyone else's that I would sit a family evening out and enjoy Thanksgiving with my close family members who won't judge me and understand that college has played a major role in my weight gain.

1. Isn't that enough on your plate, sweetheart?

No, it's not enough. It's that part of the semester where I'm starving because I'm out of swipes in the cafe, so I'm going to pile food on top of food.

2. You were much smaller last year — what happened?

Look, I know its been like 84 years since you were in college, but it's called the Freshman 15 and it's normal for about 70 percent of all college students.

3. Let the children go first, they've been hungry all day.

Okay, and I've been hungry for the past two months, now move.

4. You don't have a boyfriend up there keeping you in shape?

First of all, why do I need a boyfriend to help influence my eating habits and lifestyle? Second of all, isn't that your third husband about to be ex-husband?

5. We need to start running when you come home.

The purpose of Thanksgiving break is for me to be on a break and relax because I have finals as soon as I get back to campus, so the answer is no, we do not need to start running when I come home.

6. Go outside and run with the kids — it'll help you burn calories.

Why don't you go outside and run since they're your kids? Also, why haven't you burned any calories with all the "running around" you claim to do?

7. Why are your clothes so baggy?

In college, we live in oversized shirts and tights — get over it.

8. Wow, you've gotten very fat around the face.

At least my skin is clear and glowing unlike yours.

9. Have you heard of Nutrisystem?

Have you?

10. Why are you dressed up? Are you trying to hide the little pudge you've got now?

I should ask you the same thing since you always wear the same sweater for every family function, hot or cold, rain or shine. I happen to like oversized sweaters very much and considering mine doesn't look like a child took scissors and cut all up on it, I think it looks very nice on my body.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! May your table be full and your conversations feisty!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
