Dear Unlikely Best Friend,
First of all, I need to thank you for everything you do for me. You are most definitely one of the best people that has ever entered my life, and I am so grateful for you. From answering my phone calls at any time of the day (or night) to random adventures and breakfast dates to being okay with sitting in a coffee shop for 20 minutes or an hour and always being down to spontaneously see a movie, you're always there. But to be 100 percent honest, I never really envisioned us being such good friends. When I first met you five years ago, you were just another person that I knew from social media but didn't actually know in person — I am so glad that has all changed.
I'm not sure which one of us thought we should be pen pals when you left for school, but it was such a good decision. Your letters were filled with support and encouragement from 136 miles away. You quickly became my confidante, and I felt closer to you than a lot of the people I saw on a day-to-day basis. I think part of what works so well with us is that you are the quiet, contemplative, wise opposite to my loud, crazy, indecisive self. You help ground me and bring me back to reality when I am being over-dramatic and unrealistic.
I just want to let you know I am happy you're in my life because I know that I don't do it enough. You are so appreciated, and I doubt that I would be where I am if I didn't have your help. Although we go to different schools and live in different towns, you will always be one of my best friends and I hope you know that. Growing up is terrifying and life changes so quickly, but I am lucky because I have you by my side.
