A Thank You Letter To My Sorority Sisters
Tiffany Bounpaseuth

I wasn’t sure what all to expect when I joined a sorority. Recruitment was an exciting yet stressful experience: trying to find my home, a place that I could truly thrive in. I had heard people talk about sororities — some positive things, some negative — but when it finally came down to it, reality far exceeded any of my expectations, overshadowing anything negative that anybody ever put out there.

When I joined, I didn’t just become a body lost in an ocean of 200 girls, I became a part of something larger and something way deeper. I became part of a family, and it’s a no brainer, I mean, it’s called a sisterhood for a reason, but that term didn’t resonate until I became an integral part of the sisterhood. People so commonly make the joke that in a sorority you are essentially paying for your friends, but just as Childish Gambino says, “I’ll take that as a compliment,” because these are some of the most dedicated and selfless girls I have ever met. They are there for each other on a consistent basis and I am so honored to be associated with them.

Now, to all my sisters, thank you for encouraging not only me but each other. For showing me what true friendship looks like and for showing me how love and care should be displayed. Thank you for never judging me when I showed up to chapter meeting with no makeup and my hair a mess because it had been a rough day, and for the abundance of prayers when things were going south. For making me laugh until I cry, for making sure I don’t eat alone, for being there for the biggest moments in life, and for making me feel better with ice cream and endless movie nights. Thank you for encouraging me to be the best version of myself, for pushing me towards my goals, for never giving up on me when I felt like giving up on myself. Thank you for telling me I could when everyone was saying otherwise. Most importantly, thank you for being my family away from home.

A letter simply can't express the gratitude I have for each of you. God put you guys in my life when I needed y’all the most, and that has been the biggest blessing. From one sister to another, love y’all with everything I have, because you guys are the ones who really deserve it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
