Who needs a boyfriend when you have a BGF?

6 Reasons to Thank Your Best Guy Friend
Abby Winterrowd

You've seen it in the movies, on your favorite television show, and all over literature. It's that classic story of a girl with a sarcastic yet caring best guy friend. I'm lucky enough to have that in real life. I'm proud to say that my best friend is a witty, southern boy who loves to tease his "yankee" of a best friend (I'm from western New York). But underneath all that joking, I know that my best guy friend will be there for me 'til the end. Here are six reasons to thank your guy best friend:

1. He gives the best advice

Boy problems? Girl drama? Fashion/beauty tips? Say no more. A true BGF (best guy friend) is not afraid to help a girl out. I can't even count the number of times my BGF has picked my hair color or decided what I'm going to wear on a first date.

2. You have the best banter with him

Life is boring without a little back-and-forth. You can always count on your BGF to remind you of that really dumb thing you said six months ago, or to torment you about that one crazy ex you have.

3. He knows you're crazy, but there's no judgement

After you've been friends with your BGF for a while, he gets used to your quirky habits, and you even find yourself adopting some of his. But once again, this leaves both of you open to more mockery and taunting. You wouldn't have it any other way, though.

4. He makes you feel beautiful

He's seen you at your best, but he's also seen you at your worst. Oh, yes, he's seen you without makeup, wearing a men's XL t-shirt and those sweatpants you stole from your brother, and your hair up in a ponytail. And guess what? He still tells you that you look fine. He even encourages you to do the impossible: go in PUBLIC looking that way. Sometimes you both look rough and you just embrace each other's ratchet look. Who needs a boyfriend when you have a BGF to make you feel pretty?

5. He's protective over you

Talking to a new guy? You better alert your BGF. If he's truly your BGF, he'll want to do some hardcore stalking of this guy who's talking to his best friend. He'll always be nice to your boyfriend, but he'll also be cautious of any signs that this guy might be a heartbreaker. In some cases, he might even talk to the guy to make sure he's good enough to be with you.

6. Somehow, he always knows the cure for a heartbreak

Sometimes, not even your BGF can prevent a heartbreak. But when it happens to you, your BGF knows exactly how to get you back on your feet. He's armed with a breakup playlist on his phone and a bunch of encouraging words on his mind that he's just waiting to share with you. I have a rule in all my relationships that I will never prioritize a boyfriend over my BGF because I know that if something goes wrong in my relationship, the first person I will turn to is my BGF, without a doubt. At the end of the day, there's no love better than love from your BGF.

Your BGF is one of life's most precious gifts, and we must remember that underneath all that sarcastic teasing and seemingly relentless mockery, there's a guy who loves and really cares about his best girl friend.

I would like to dedicate this article to my BGF, who actually called me as I wrote this article, simply to ask how I was doing. Sir, you know who you are. Thank you for teaching me so many lessons. Because of you, the future sure does beat the heck out of the past.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
