Thank You, Mom

Thinking of you this upcoming Mother's Day.

Thank You, Mom

Mom,

Where do I even start? I could thank you for dealing with my rebellious and bratty attitude in Middle School. I could thank you for wiping my tears when I used to come home crying after fighting with my friends. I could thank you for stopping me from making some very bad decisions about boys, or for sneaking me glasses of wine at our family parties. However, if I were to list everything I could thank you for, there would not be enough Odyssey articles in the world.

Mom, you come from a long line of beautiful and compassionate women. When I wake up and I look at myself in the mirror, I smile knowing people think I look just like you. I can only hope that some day people will say I have a heart just like you, too. For my whole life, you have been nothing but caring and understanding of everything I have gone through. Your patience astonishes me and your strong will to put others before you inspire me. You are and always will be the most selfless and kindhearted woman I have ever met.

Mom, thank you for listening to my dramatic rants about my everyday experiences. You are the first person I think to text when something funny, crazy or embarrassing happens. I look forward to our daily phone calls more than you know, even if I sometimes hang up teary eyed because I miss you every day that I am away at school. I can’t thank you enough for answering my drunken phone calls at 2 a.m., when I beg you to add Ram Bucks onto my card so I can get pizza. You don’t complain that I woke you up or yell at me the next day. You make sure I get home safely and the next morning you make sure that hangover isn’t killing me. Thank you.

Mom, thank you for always giving me your honest opinion (even if I don’t always want to hear it). I didn’t always know it, but you have this knack for always being right. I don’t know if it’s a “mom” thing, or if that’s just who you are, but since I’ve been old enough to ask for advice, you have always given me the best. I find that if I ignore your advice, I end up realizing that it was a bad move on my part. Then, before you know it I’m back begging you to get me out of yet another situation that could have been easily avoided. Again, your patience astonishes me.

I know that physically I have let go of you many times. I let go of your hands when I learned how to walk on my own, and when you dropped me off on my first day of Kindergarten. I left the comfort of your arms at my High School Graduation, when you had to go watch from the stands and I had to go get my diploma. I had to tear myself away from you as you dropped me off at college two years ago, and I continue to let go of you each time I go back to school. As a mom, it is your job to let me go so I can grow as a person, but I want you to know that the bond we share is something neither of us can ever let go of. The relationship that we have is something that I cherish and appreciate every day.

Mom, I wish that I could thank you for everything you have done for me. I wish that I could repay you for everything you have given me, and give back every experience you ever had to give up for me. Thank you for being such a positive influence in my life, and for getting me through some pretty hard times. I want you to know that I am forever grateful for everything you do. I want you to see me prosper in life; as a college student, someday as a wife, and always as your daughter. I want you to watch me grow and I want to make you proud. Mom, you are my best friend, even though we’re apart most of the time. Just like we always say, “Maybe in distance, but never at heart.”

I love you Mom, Happy Mother’s Day.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
