An Open Letter To My Freshman Roommate

To my first roommate,

As freshman year is coming to an end, I began to look back and reflect on what has made this transition year so memorable. This year would not have been the same if it wasn't for my first roommate. I will forever be so grateful because without her, I don't know what I would do. To my first college friend, this one is for you.

Finding out who my roommate was a month before move-in was one of the most nerve-wracking experiences. You were a complete stranger that I was about to share a room with for ten months. Facebook and Instagram stalking before we met for the first time was probably one of the most anticipating moments in our lives. Finding out the name of the girl I would live with for ten months, you bet that I went in full FBI mode. After we started texting, I figured we would get along, but I had never imagined that we would end up being best friends.

From the second we moved in, I felt like we had known each other for our entire lives. Everyone thought that we were best friends before moving in, but in fact, we just met while decorating our room. I have no idea how I have gone through 18 years of my life without having you by my side.

After the first week of school, boundaries stopping existing. We started rummaging through each other's closets and sharing food. You quickly became my go-to person that I went to for anything because I developed a fast trust with you. We have gone through so much together in these past ten months that I don't know how I will survive all summer without sharing a room with you.

Thank you for everything you do for me. From letting me borrow clothes, to spotting me money if I didn't have my wallet with me. Thank you for being so spontaneous with me and going on all of our adventures while trying to learn our way around. Thank you for always being down to go to Taco Bell when the caf didn't have good food. Thank you for understanding me and getting me.

Thank you for being my mom when I needed a supporter, a best friend when I needed a good laugh, and a sister who I could vent to. Thank you for our endless laughs over the dumbest things. Thank you for all that you have done for me, I can assure you that everything is appreciated and doesn't go unnoticed.

This year would not have been the same if I didn't have you to share it with. The memories in that tiny room we endured all year together will never be forgotten. No other person could binge-watch our favorite TV shows on Netflix, rock out to old pop music, hardcore rap, and then country tunes like you did with me.

I am so lucky to have been matched with someone I could not live the rest of my life without. You have turned into one of my best friends and I couldn't be more thankful for you making this one of the best years of my life.

Thank you for everything,
Your new best friend.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
