When it comes to family, I consider myself to be very lucky. I am blessed to not only have a mother and father, but also two younger brothers. Being away at college really opened my eyes to two things that I've always known, but never truly grasped. Not only do I appreciate my family for everything that they do, but that I am strong and independent because my family has made me that way.
My family is anything except perfect. We fight, argue, say things we don't mean, you get my drift. Sure, it's not all fun and games, but we also get along really well. There's nobody else whom I'd rather talk politics with, help around the kitchen and overall just live with.
My mom always says, "I feel sorry for whoever has to put up with you for the rest of your life." Normally, I'd be offended, but I'm not going to lie, I am by no means an easy person to live with. I hog the shower for hours at a time, I have probably the worst attitude in the world, I leave dirty dishes in the sink and I have a nasty habit of isolating myself when my family gets together. But somehow, they put up with it. That's a pretty big deal.
My parents aren't perfect, but they have always worked to give my brothers and I everything we've ever wanted or needed, and for that I'm truly grateful. It was this hardworking attitude that has given me the motivation needed for day-to-day life. Nothing has ever been handed to me, and while it's looked at as inconvenient to some, it has taught me important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
So Mom, Dad, Joe and James, thank you. Thank you for teaching me humility and maturity. Thank you for giving me a sense of humor, a sarcastic tongue and manners. I know we don't see eye to eye more often than not, but I still love and appreciate each and every one of you for all that you do, individually and as a family. I wouldn't be who I am today without it.
