Whether you are studying abroad in China for a few months or you are just visiting for a few days, here are some important tips/facts that you might want to know before embarking on your journey.
1. Most people in China do not drink cold water.
I didn’t know this before going abroad. So it was quite a shock when I went out to dinner and our water was boiling hot. If you do want cold water, you most likely will have to pay extra or you have to ask for it specifically. Also, most drinking fountains do not provide cold water. Usually, it's either "warm" or "hot".
2. All public toilets are squatting toilets
What I mean by squatting toilets is that the toilet bowl is in the ground. So instead of sitting on a throne, you are actually squatting over the ground. At first, it's uncomfortable and hard to stay stable (lol). But after a few times, you get the hang of it.
3. You must bring your own toilet paper to the bathroom
Surprisingly, most public bathrooms do not provide toilet paper for their users. So don’t forget to pack those tissues. Also, it might be a good idea to bring hand sanitizer as well!
4. You will most likely have your photo taken by complete strangers
If you are visiting the less touristy places in China, your photo IS going to be taken by locals. Many Chinese citizens are not used to tourists, so get ready for photo shoots on a daily basis.
5. Pedestrians don’t have the right away. LOOK BOTH WAYS.
All I can say is traffic is crazy and drivers WILL HIT YOU. Even when the light does say "walk", I suggest you look both ways before crossing the street. Also, drivers honk their horns a lot, so don't be alarmed.
6. Check your meat for bones
Most restaurants cook the entire animal and then serve the dish. Make sure you are checking all of our meat dishes for bones. #chokinghazard
7. Use the App "Google Translate"
This app saved my butt on more than one occasion while abroad. Not only does this app allow you to type out what you want to say, it also allows you to write Chinese characters into the app. It also has a camera option that scans and translates writing in real time.
8. Bring clothes that you can get sweaty in
Spring and summer months are HOT HOT HOT in China. To the point where it's almost unbearable. If you are visiting during the Spring and Summer months, I encourage you to wear breathable clothing. It is also a great idea to invest in a fan.
9. There are no dryers
If you plan on doing laundry while abroad (which I'm hoping you will). This is a friendly PSA that there are washers but there are no dryers. All clothes are hung to dry outside. Which means getting your laundry done will take longer than expected. Plan accordingly.
10. Bring Laxatives AND anti-diarrhea medication
All I can say is you never know what to expect. Especially going abroad, trying new foods might mess with your GI tract. Its best to be prepared for both scenarios. Laxatives and anti-diarrhea medications can be purchased over the counter!
Please know that there is so much more to know and learn about China than just these ten tips. These are more ~survival~ tips. Enjoy your time abroad! China is an amazing country full of culture and amazing people.
