People tend to assign genders with hobbies, video games included. Sometimes, being a girl who plays them can be a struggle.
1. Being Stereotyped
"Oh, you're a girl and you play video games? You know Farmville doesn't count, right?"
Yes, we know. Stop generalizing us.
2. Unwanted Attention
Seriously, can't I just shop at Gamestop in peace? I'll be waiting in line to get the new Pokemon Sun and Moon, so what?
3. Not Being Taken Seriously
"Yeah, this is pretty hard to play. You should probably stick with something more on your level."
Oh, really? Come at me, let's test that statement.
4. Having People 'Go Easy' On You
Especially on Mario Kart, this can get really annoying. Stop trying to be nice and just play the game. Quit underestimating us.
5. Disrespect
We all know that one girl on Instagram who poses with a controller to try and get lucky. But the majority of us are NOT. THAT. GIRL. Quit treating us like objects and putting all of us in one box. We are all very different people.
6. Representation
Yes, there are a lot of women in video games. However, it's super rare to find a woman in a game who is either a main character or not over-sexualized. Seriously, how are we supposed to survive a stab wound in bikini armor? And how often do we see a protagonist woman of color? Or women in the LGBTQA+ community? Almost never. This needs to be fixed.
7. Constantly Being Tested
Just because I'm a girl doesn't automatically make me a 'fake fan', so quit making me answer trivia to prove myself. If I was a guy, this wouldn't be a problem. Quit being shallow minded. If I like something, then I like it, and it's extremely unnecessary for you to feel like you have to verify my interests.
8. Being Invalidated
A gamer is anyone who likes to play games. That's it, bottom line. So if a person enjoys playing casual games, that's fine. They're happy, so get over it. You don't have to have played all the original Zelda games to be classified as an actual gamer. Get off of your high horse and stop telling people that they are fake because of what they enjoy. The fact that you have to put them down to feel superior says a lot about the kind of person you are.
9. The Demographic For Girl Gamers
It seems like when companies sit down to make games geared towards women, it has do do with fashion or cooking or raising children. Again, women are very different from one another, just like men. And while some of us may really enjoy games like Cooking Mama, not all of us do. It all comes down to generalization and shallow-mindedness.
10. But at the End Of The Day, It's All In Fun
That's the point of playing video games anyways, to have fun. And we won't let anyone spoil that.
So yes, while it can be unfair and just plain annoying at times to be a girl gamer, we will continue to stand up for ourselves until the time comes where we are seen as just 'gamers', without gender being an issue.
