I love food, I really do. I probably think about food 44 percent of the time. To make matters worse, I’m also a foodie. I'm down to eat practically anything that’ll come my way. When you love food just as much as I do, you’ll always be willing to try a new spin on the classics, but know that the tried and true favorites are the best. So here are the ten foods you MUST eat before this summer ends.
1. S’mores.
S’mores are an essential part of any summer diet. The perfect mix of gooey marshmallow, melty chocolate, and crunchy graham cracker just tastes like summer. S’mores always taste better when made over an open fire, but making them at home is just as easy! It’s also super easy to add a unique twist to the treat; by using different types of chocolate (caramel, dark or reese’s), or by using flavored marshmallows. 2. Homemade ice cream.
Okay, I’m biased. Homemade ice cream is always better than store bought. Every summer, I whip up a few batches of homemade ice cream with flavors you simply can't find in stores. Some unique ones I've tried include Honey Lavender, Cotton Candy (my favorite), Peanut Butter, and Kit Kat. 3. Fresh fruit.
One perk of living in the Garden State is having fresh produce available year round. Nothing is better than eating strawberries or peaches picked fresh from the farm. Fresh local farms always have the best fruit, completely free of GMOs and chemicals. Plus, going to local farmer’s markets or to pick-your-own fruit and vegetable farms is a nice activity, and also a good way to support local businesses!
4. Homemade lemonade.
Yet again, I’m biased, homemade is ALWAYS better. Freshly squeezed lemonade will always taste better than powder mixes; there's no chemically, artificial taste, and the lemon juice will provide just enough tartness. Plus, lemonade is super easy to customize. Last year at a family party, I had a DIY lemonade bar with different flavored syrups! Lavender Lemonade is something you would never expect to taste good, but it is so delicious. Other delicious lemonades to make include strawberry, blueberry, mint, and raspberry. 5. Watermelon.
Watermelon: summer’s best fruit. Not only is this fruit delicious, but it’s also filled with healthy vitamins and is ultra hydrating (hello, WATER-melon)! Watermelon is also super easy to make into drinks and cocktails, and a refreshing treat when it's hot outside. Here’s a little tip to make watermelon taste even better: sprinkle a little salt on it. The salt brings out the sweetness and adds a unique twist to the light fruit.
6. Corn on the cob.
Corn on the cob can really only be enjoyed during the summer months, especially because it's only available during the summer. Wouldn’t it be a bit odd to come inside after playing in the snow and eat a delicious ear of corn? Plus, the options are endless! You can grill corn, boil corn, make salsa and/or add it to a steam pot with seafood. You can even make “Mexican Street Corn” (as Pinterest calls it). 7. Ice cream sandwiches.
Two warm cookies sandwiching creamy cool ice cream – that’s what summer tastes like. Few people will admit it, but ice cream sandwiches trump most ice cream snacks. Luckily, ice cream sandwiches aren’t just limited to the ones you pick off the shelf at a local grocery store or 7/11. Ice cream sandwiches can be made out of any type of cookie or ice cream! Imagine two chocolate cookies with a nice scoop of chocolate chip cookie dough in the middle – a chocolate chip cookie heaven! What about sugar cookies with any Ben & Jerry’s flavor on the inside?

8. Fish tacos.
The best thing to eat after spending the day at the shore is a nice and crispy fish taco. The crispy fish and tortilla combo is filling, but won’t weigh you down or make you sluggish after spending the whole day in the sun. The meal pairs perfectly with fresh pico de gallo or a fresh salsa that just screams summer. The light but crisp flavors capture the essence of summer: breezy and care free.
9. Hamburgers and cheeseburgers.
Unfortunately I don’t have much experience in this category, because I've been a pescatarian for the past three summers. But trust me – it really blows not eating meat and having to smell hamburgers on the grill while watching everyone eat a delicious juicy burger. Whenever summer rolls around, I crave a delicious hamburger fresh off the grill. Plus, it's so easy to put any type of topping or cheese on these burgers and it still be delicious! Here's a list of inventive burgers that will make any vegetarian jealous: http://www.foodnetwork.com/grilling/grilling-central-burgers-and-hot-dogs/50-burger-recipes.html.
10. Anything (and everything) from an ice cream truck.
Picture this: a hot summer day spent playing outside, then you hear it. The familiar song of the ice cream man. Any 8-year-old's favorite person! For under $5, you can pick up a nice cool treat on a hot day. Choco tacos and strawberry cheesecake bars, and in some cases, even a wide variety of italian ice. Relive those hot summer days as a kid and next time you hear the song of the ice cream man ringing through your neighborhood, go outside and grab your favorite childhood treat. It’ll still be as good as you last remembered.
