I remember when I realized that broadcast journalism was what I wanted to major in in college, almost to the exact moment.
I wanted to be many things growing up, a teacher (which is probably why I was always a teachers' pet) this is also the thing that I had wanted to do for the longest, a Physical Therapist (this idea came about my sophomore year of high school), an architect (I played the SIMS growing up and loved designing houses, but then I realized how much actual math it takes to do this job) before I finally decided on broadcast journalism.
My junior year was the year that changed and challenged me a lot. I think one of the most important changes I went through was a stressful relationship and the effects it had on me. The second? A project that paved the way for the course I'm on now.
The class was an AV Production one that was the "prerequisite" for ETV, the 30 to 50-minute show produced for each Friday and was the "news" source for my high school.
For the project, we had to get into pairs and create a package (the journalism term for the stories that are seen tv) and it was almost instant. I had so much fun working on that project that my curiosity grew and I wanted to do more.
That next fall I was in the ETV course and really able to expand my desire for journalism. It was that class that I did my first ever news package, by myself. I also had a segment on almost every (if not, every other) week.
Now that I'm three semesters from graduating college (with the journalism major), I have realized just how hard it truly is but that hasn't stopped me yet. In fact, I've grown to love it even more.
I've learned so much more in a short amount of time. I've been on the radio and worked on a 30-minute student-produced newscast, found my own stories to report on and more.
Mrs. Mac, I just wanted to say thank you, because without that project and without your class, I honestly have no CLUE what I would be majoring in right now. I always loved teaching, so maybe that's what I would have been working towards, maybe it would have been something completely different. I learned a lot in your class that I still use today, especially with Premiere.
Thank you for believing in me and helping me find my passion. Thank you for the inspiration.
