As someone who has been listening to Taylor Swift ever since she started putting out music over ten years ago, I have to say that I am an expert on all of her albums. Some are definitely better than others, and a true Swift fan will have their own expert opinions on each and every track. But based on the six albums she's put out, here's an official ranking featuring the best, worst, and most underrated song on the album.
5. Red
It's hard for me to even put this album here. But to be quite honest, it doesn't pack as much of a punch as some of her other albums. The singles off the album like "22" and "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" were huge successes, but some of the other songs released on the album just weren't as good. This is where Swift starts to make the transition from country to pop, and the genre switch came as a shock to many loyal fans.
Best song: "22"
Most underrated song: "Treacherous" or "State of Grace"
Worst song: "The Moment I Knew"
4. 1989
This album is pure pop. It has some true Taylor Swift gems, but she's still trying to find her voice in the pop scene. Her singles "Blank Space", "Bad Blood", and "Shake It Off" show her new style really well, even though it's very different from the Taylor we thought we knew. She's growing up, and we see that progression pretty clearly in 1989. Swift also touches on heartbreak in "Clean", "Wildest Dreams" and "This Love", and let's be honest, that's what makes it a true T. Swift album. Overall, it's a solid album that shows a new side of the singer/songwriter we haven't yet seen.
Best song: "Clean" and "Blank Space"
Most underrated song: "I Wish You Would"
Worst song: "Shake It Off"
3. Speak Now
As her last country album, Speak Now is one of the best albums Taylor has put out. The reason it's in the number 3 spot? There isn't a huge variety of topics that she touches on. That would be my only criticism. As a pure breakup album, Swift unleashes all of her emotions and you really feel the heartbreak. In "Dear John" we get a very personal closer look at the relationship she had with John Mayer. Her single "Mean" is a shoutout to all the haters that said she couldn't do it, and "Mine" is a sweet ballad about volatile young love. There weren't many singles on this album and the songs tend to air on the longer side, but it still is one of the best albums she's put out.
Best song: "Ours"
Most underrated song: "If This Was A Movie" or "Long Live"
Worst song: "Innocent"
2. Taylor Swift (Self-Titled)
This was her first album, and it was truly incredible. Her debut single, "Tim McGraw" captured the hearts of Americans in 2006 and it's still a fan favorite eleven years later. She was a pure country girl and she did this so well. The songwriting on this album is superb, especially for Swift's first dip in the professional musician waters. Her singles "Picture To Burn" and "Teardrops On My Guitar" did very well in the US charts as her first few songs about heartbreak, and "I'm Only Me When I'm With You" is an incredible tribute to her friend, Abigail. Not to mention that "Our Song" was a huge hit as well. As a Swift fan, this album has everything you could ever ask for.
Best song: "Tim McGraw" or "Teardrops On My Guitar"
Most underrated song: "Stay Beautiful"
Worst song: "Cold As You"
1. Fearless
This album truly captures the essence of Taylor Swift and how songs can impact a generation. Her hit single "Love Story" is one of the most popular Taylor Swift songs to date, and it never gets old. "You Belong With Me" was the song that was sung at countless sleepovers into a hairbrush microphone. The mood on this album is quite light compared to that of Speak Now and Red, which are both much darker in comparison. Her second album is a much more tuned up, polished and professional release than her first. The single "The Best Day" is a tribute to her family that will instantly have you feeling the need to call your own mother. Other releases like "Fifteen", "Hey Stephen" and "White Horse" all show her depiction of what young love felt like to teenage Taylor, which was relatable to every single teen girl in the country.
Best song: "Forever and Always"
Most underrated song: "Jump Then Fall"
Worst song: "SuperStar"
