So far, four major Republicans have come out against Trump. A former President, a former candidate for President, and two prominent Senators. Now that we are eleven months into this nightmare of a presidency, these four men have somehow managed to start putting the country before their party. It took long enough but welcome to the party gentlemen. However, George W. Bush is no longer in politics, and the other three have said they do not plan to seek re-election. Instead of gearing up for a fight, to take our country back from the thieves who have stolen it, they are throwing their hands in the air and giving up. Our country needs people who are going to fight this administration.
George W. Bush gave a speech a few weeks ago at an event in New York. Even though he has insisted otherwise, many believe the speech was about Trumpism. The idea that we have “seen nationalism distorted into nativism – forgotten the dynamism that immigration has always brought to America.” I can’t believe I am quoting and agreeing with Bush 43. The former President went on to say, “This means that people of every race, religion, and ethnicity can be fully and equally American. It means that bigotry or white supremacy in any form is blasphemy against the American creed.” He was calling out Trumpism for what it is. Hateful and fear-mongering rhetoric. He didn’t even have to use Trump’s name to do it. Not once did Bush mention the current president. He ended the speech with, “The American spirit does not say, ‘We shall manage,’ or ‘We shall make the best of it.’ It says, ‘We shall overcome.’” I personally saw this speech as inspiring to many Americans who are concerned with the direction in which we are going, also a call to leaders in Washington. Look at Trump for what he is, look at what he is doing to our country.
Senator John McCain (R-AZ) has been calling out Trump since election. Trump has attacked, verbally and on Twitter, Mr. McCain many times. Trump has questioned his military service. Whether you agree or disagree with John McCain, the man is a war hero. He fought and was captured during the Vietnam war and held for five years as a P.O.W. What was Trump doing during this time? Getting draft deferments. He got four for education and one for bone spurs in his feet. During an interview this past week with C-SPAN, McCain stated, “they drafted the lowest income level of Americans, and the highest income level got a doctor to say they had bone spurs.” Many pundits saw this as a swipe to Trump’s deferments. McCain was asked he if he considered Trump a “draft dodger”, McCain stated, “It’s not that I consider him one, I feel that the system was so wrong that certain Americans could evade their responsibility to serve the country.”
Senators Bob Corker (R-TN) and Jeff Flake (R-AZ) are the most recent to come out against Trump. Corker is the more outspoken one. Calling out Trump’s lies on Twitter and using the most perfect of hashtags #AlertTheDaycareStaff. The thing with these two senators though, is that they have said they are not seeking re-election. Instead of fighting for what is right, and getting their colleagues to see Trump’s major misgivings, they are quitting.
This makes me realize something, we are not going to get any help from Republicans like Paul Ryan or Mitch McConnell. They have been spineless since they endorsed Trump, and we will not let them forget it. The resistance will not let the Republican party forget this HUGE mistake. America has been wounded for the past year. We cannot and will not let this happen again. Resist.
