Take off your cool cap, and don't put it back on. Those are some of the first words we were told at New Maroon Camp (NMC) at Mississippi State.

First off, if your reading this, and you are planning on going to MSU as a freshman or transfer student, I highly recommend NMC. I truly believe I have met some life long friends. Every single person on staff at NMC truly cares and wants to know you.

The family groups are so amazing. You don't have to wear your cool cap. Even if you come into camp with it on, you should take it off and just be you.

Some of you might be wondering what a "cool cap" is. It is a metaphor for thinking that you are just too cool to get involved in everything. Maybe you were the popular jock in high school or maybe you just think something is stupid. Let me just tell you that you're wrong.

Anyone who gave camp a shot will tell you that taking off your cool cap is the best decision you can make. It allows you to meet new people that you probably would have never known otherwise like your counselors.

My counselors were the BEST! I couldn't have asked for anyone better. They taught me so much and pushed the whole group to get out of their comfort zones.

During camp, there are numerous activities to get involved in. One of those activities is the family group lip sync battle. I am not one to get in front of people and be a ham, but I did at NMC. I would have never done that if my counselors wouldn't have pushed me to get out there and just have fun.

At New Maroon, you don't have to worry about not fitting in. It truly gives you another family. Camp really helps you see that you are so much more than what you think. And for some people, it shows you that you can belong.

At the family group closing ceremony, everyone really expressed their love and support for each other. Everyone felt so much freedom around each other. Honestly, it was at that point when I realized how much the week meant to me. It was only a week of camp. and we all felt so connect. There were tears shed by counselors and campers along with tons of laughter.

So yeah, if you are planning on going to MSU, sign up for NMC. It will change your life.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
