Take Back The Night

Wherever we go, however we dress, no means no and yes means yes.

Take Back The Night

Last week, I took part in the second annual Take Back the Night event at my college. For those of you who don't know, Take Back the Night (TBTN) is a movement to raise awareness for sexual, relationship and domestic abuse. There were a few speakers and a candlelit march, chant included. Then we all headed back to our rooms. And while the event was powerful, I realized that I had a way to raise even more awareness.

TBTN events started in the early 1970s following the murder of a microbiologist. It was the title of a memorial read at an anti-violence rally, with a variation of the title being used in Belgium for a march protesting violence against women. In 2001, some of the women who had been at the original march formed a non-profit organization to end violence against women.

Since then, the movement has spread to 30 countries and across the U.S., mainly on college campuses. Some schools opt to keep it a female-only event while others welcome males and advocate for an end to sexual violence of all kinds. At each event there is typically a survivor who speaks on their story, followed by a candlelit vigil or march.

This movement is incredibly important in today's culture, where rape and sexual abuse are still brushed under the rug. One in three women and one in six men will be sexually assaulted or abused at some point in their lives. Less than 50 percent of these crimes are reported. Take Back the Night is trying to put an end to this.

One of the phrases often chanted at these events is "shatter the silence." This is a call to those who have chosen not to tell their stories and report their abusers. It's a call for them to join the movement and the support system built into it. Each event tends to have counselors, and local abuse shelters who can help people coming out of abusive relationships or recovering from sexual assault.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
