An Open Letter To The Class I Hate

I don't actually hate you.

I've always known I was going to go to college. And I've always wanted to get a quality education.

But this is not what I pictured.

To graduate from my, and most other, Universities and Colleges, you must complete a certain amount of undergrad classes. Yes yes, we all know this. But I had no idea what types of classes would be in these lists to chose from.

I have never had a problem in school. I've typically enjoyed my time in my classes. So I never, in a million years, thought about these classes that I would be forced to chose from.

I browsed this section of the list carefully and with one eye closed, hoping then, just maybe, the courses would disappear. I took music in high school, I barely passed the final because I can't play a recorder to save my life. The last time I took an art class was in 5th grade.. seriously. I am the least artsy person you will ever meet.

Science is my strong suit and always has been so straying away from that felt like I was cheating on my favorite subject.

However, junior year of high school, my friends and I went to the art museum in Saint Louis. Mostly because that is what everyone did, so of course we had to as well.

I enjoyed our time at the art museum. I felt butterflies in my stomach when looking at a painting so large you needed to stand on the other side of the room just to get the full picture. I really enjoyed this "thing" that I had never seen before.

So when looking through the list, art history left the least bitter taste in my mouth. I went for it and I have never looked back. I feel very out of place in my class, simply because I lack the same vocabulary that 95% of the class has.

I find this class to be extremely interesting and eye-opening, especially for someone who has never been very interested in the arts.

Everyone always says that college is the time to take the class that interests you but is outside your major. And I fully support this idea. I thoroughly enjoy my art class even if it's not biology.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
