9 Weird Things That Aren't So Weird In College

College is a mystery place. We all know that. Stuff goes down here that if it happened anywhere else, I'm sure we'd all be locked away somewhere, or at least looked at strangely.

College life is the weird microcosm of four years where pretty much anything goes–and the weirder it gets, the better it is. College kids do some dumb stuff, but their crazy lives usually end up creating some pretty innovative solutions to their many ailments. Here are just a few of the rather weird things we college kids do that aren't so weird here.

1. Chugging caffeine after midnight

If I don't, it's an off day. There never seems to be enough time in the day, so I always find myself using the night to play catch up.

2. Jerseys.. jerseys.. jerseys

I feel like anyone visiting a campus would assume we don't have normal stores around here. Darty? Jersey. Gameday? Jersey. Random warm day? Jersey. Class? Jersey. A little friendly mid-Wednesday afternoon game of dye? Jersey, obviously.

3. A very off time-clock

I've started looking at the clock and thinking "oh hey it's only 3am!" My poor body.

4. Getting up 4 minutes before class

College kids have this down to a second. I can't remember the last time I woke up more than 7 minutes before my early classes. 2 minutes to get ready (and look stylish af) and 5 to speed walk across campus. A talent.

5. Eating literally whenever

If someone offers me food, or asks if I want to order in, I don't question the fact it's 3 am in the middle of the week. Or that I have no money, for that matter. There's no such thing as meal times.

6. Taking a detour into a bar on the way to class

It's rare I walk down South U and see bars empty, especially when it's nice out or there's a game on. Class? I don't know her.

7. Scheduling a class just to be with friends

Oh, you mean I didn't need Dance 100 for neuroscience? Whoops.

8. Asking someone to go out at 2 AM

My middle school self wouldn't believe it, but I think I meet up with people more often in the middle of the night than any other time.

9. Face-timing your pets

It's a given. Being away from family is hard, but they know where you are– meanwhile your pets don't know if you're coming back (cue endless crying). A weekly FT makes you feel a lot better, I swear it helps them too.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
