November 19, 2016. Tacoma, Washington
This weekend, I decided to attend an anti-Trump protest, and as expected it was undeniably empowering. As someone who recently moved to Tacoma from the Los Angeles area, a sense of community was definitely there. This protest was organized by Queer Activists Tacoma.
Often, the media shines a light on the violent nature of some protests; buildings being burnt down, tension between the police force and citizens. But, what they don't show is the hundreds of peaceful protests that happen across the country each weekend. This protest took place in the North End of Tacoma which is primarily white. But, people of all races, sexualities, and socioeconomic backgrounds came together and demonstrated unity in a time when this country needs it most. Personally, it was tear jerking to see little kids march alongside their parents, because they are the future. So as I stepped out on the streets and marched alongside these beautiful individuals I felt nothing but happiness and love. And, as a minority it's nice to know I have an exuberant amount of allies within my new community.
I brought my friend's camera to this protest, so I could capture the sense of unity and hope within the Tacoma community.
Remember to continue to educate yourself, go out and protest, find allies, and give a voice to those who don't.
