This past Summer, I have been an intern on a small organic, sustainable farm in South Central Pennsylvania, and I have learned an incredible amount of useful information. Some of my knowledge is super empowering, like the fact that I can feed people. But some of it is a little crazy pants, like women’s cycles can mimic the moon cycle. Talk about syncing up! This might seem like some "whoo whoo sh*t" but I find it really interesting. I haven't even tried-- and even if I did, I don't think I would admit it.
Syncing your period with the moon and reclaiming that ancestral womanhood seems fascinating on some deep level. It almost makes such an icky time of the month, beautiful and celebrated. This is not only helpful with tracking your period and helping create natural cycles, but it can help with tracing fertility and ovulation for women trying to get pregnant. Especially when you sync with the traditional New Moon. Ending your period becomes symbolic of a new beginning. Also, statistics support that during Full Moons more freaky sh*t happens, so at least you won’t be extra cray during that time either.
The first step is becoming more habitual and ritualistic. Maintaining a good sleep cycle is paramount. Your menstruation is, after-all, a cycle. Keep your space light during the day and dark at night. In this day and age, it is hard to be in darkness, from phone screens to LED lighting. So at night, try to keep your house in low lighting and don’t stay up staring at screens all night. Even try finding an alarm clock with a night setting because the blue lights can affect your sleep. Though, during the five or six days of the Full Moon it helps to sleep with a 100 watt light on. This mimics the light of the Full Moon and can help regulate your menstruation.
During the New Moon be reflective and turn inwards. What is going right, wrong, and what is just meh? There is some witchy sh*t about being thoughtful and your estrogen levels. I am not sure if biologists would agree, but hey, whatever. Who am I to question magic?
The Full Moon is the time to be full. Express yourself and live as big as the moon appears. It is suggested that you go out in the moonlight with a bunch of female friends. The boosted estrogen will help sync you to the moon. There are a lot of naturalists that celebrate their menstruation with other women in small ritualistic ways, like spending a lot of time together during different parts of their cycle, and this can be done particularly on the Full Moon. It is pretty darn important to moonbathe during the Full Moon period. The light of the Moon is incredibly healing and provides your body with good energy.
Leave windows open. Part of the journey is to just connect more with the natural world. So don’t shut yourself up from the world. Living in a temperature controlled world is rather boring. Throw the windows open like you’re Snow White, or some sh*t. Let the noises of nature in! Maybe the smell isn’t always wonderful and bugs can be as annoying as that girl you work with, but deal. You can’t control everything. You might find your body will become more adaptable if you stop trying to control your environment.
At the end of the day (or cycle) it doesn’t really matter if you don’t sync up right away. It could take months or years. The most important part is the process and journey. Getting to know nature and yourself better is key. Celebrating your menstruation is such a rarity-- besides the first five seconds of relief that you aren’t pregnant. The general message is periods are icky and not to be talked about or discussed. So go out and change that! Reclaim this ancient part of you!
