Surviving Valentine's Day: For The Single Girl

Who said you need a boyfriend to celebrate Valentine's Day?

With Valentine's Day right around the corner, you might be feeling a little down in the dumps. You walk into Wal-Mart to pick up some Ben & Jerry’s, but instead you see flowers, chocolate and balloons. Red and pink flood the aisles and that stupid little cupid is on every single card in stock. Personally, I’ve never really celebrated Valentine's. I think I’ve had a few dinners here and there; I may have even received a necklace. However, for the majority of Valentine's Days that I've celebrated, I've been single.

I mean, this is a holiday only to be celebrated by couples, right? Wrong!

I’m here to tell you that this year it's time to treat yourself. Whether you are newly single, or you just really enjoy Valentine's Day, here are 5 things you can do (alone or with your friends) this Valentine's Day.

1. Go see a movie

I’m sure you’re not the only girl in your friend group that is single. Round up all the girls and make a trip to the movies. There are several outstanding movies coming out in February, such as “How to Be Single" and “The Choice.” There's even “Deadpool,” for you girls that love Marvel movies. Tickets can range from eight to eleven dollars so you wont be breaking the bank.

2. Get a massage

This one is a little pricey, but take the money you would spend on a gift for a boyfriend and instead spend it on yourself. Massage Envy offers a one-hour massage session for around 50 dollars. While the price might seem a little steep, think about this: when was last time you had a whole hour just to pamper yourself?

3. Go to Godiva

Who says you need a boyfriend to get chocolates? Personally, my favorite thing to get is the chocolate covered strawberries or the peppermint truffles. Godiva is known for their specialty in chocolate, so it’s a little more expensive than something you would just grab off the shelf at Wal-Mart. I promise you wont regret the splurge!

4. Make a trip to Sephora. Do I need to say more?

I remember the times when I did have a boyfriend, and all the money I would fork out to make sure they had the perfect gift. Adios to those days. Sephora is like a candy store for grown women. Grab a few of the girls and go to Sephora to look at all the different mascaras, lipsticks, and finally buy that Kat Von D contouring palette that you’ve had your eye on since Christmas. It’ll last a lot longer than those Valentine’s Day blues!

5. Send out Valentine's Day cards

While this may seem like something you would've done when you were in elementary school, but just because you don’t have a boyfriend doesn’t mean you can't share the love. If you live far away from home, send cute little cards to your parents, brothers and sisters and even your grandparents. I promise this won't only make you feel 10 times better, but it'll make your family happy too. Who doesn't love receiving cards?

All in all, Valentine's Day can be kind of sucky if you’re single. Take my advice and make the day fun; do things that you love to do. I'll bet your friends that have boyfriends will be just a little bit jealous when they see you rocking that new Kat Von D palette.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
