I just finished my second year of college marching band camp, which makes this my sixth year overall when including high school band camp. After going through a week of straight heat, marching, and playing, I've come up with a list of tips to survive being outside for 14 hours during (coincidentally) the hottest week of the year, every year.

1. You never know how hot it's going to be when on the field until you're on it.

Memorial Stadium isn't called "The Microwave" for no reason.

2. Water is your best friend.

I'm not kidding.

3. And sunscreen is your even better best friend.

Especially when you are a red head.

4. Sleep is crucial. Don't take it for granted.

Sorry friends I haven't seen since last school year, I'll hang out with you after this week.

5. Don't underestimate the importance of good tennis shoes!!!

6. But also appreciate when you get to wear flip flops as well.

Your feet will appreciate it even more.

7. Keep a full water bottle with you wherever you go.

Preferably filled with cold water. Duh.

8. Being in a college marching band is exciting, but you still have to do your part.

Just because you're one person doesn't mean you are overlooked.

9. Memorize, memorize, memorize.

Or, if you're like me and suck at memorizing music: try your best. Just don't suck.

10. Don't forget about sunscreen.

11. Or water.

12. Bring backups of things in case you need it.

Backup water bottle, backup sunscreen, backup music, backup instrument (okay, if you need a backup instrument, that sounds like a big problem), etc.

13. Sunglasses are a must.

Unless you would rather be blinded by all the paleness of the shirtless guys in other sections (sorry trombones).

14. Makes friends with your section!

You'll be stuck with them the entire season, so you might as well!

15. Be prepared to have the same four songs stuck in your head for the next two-four months.

This is a serious problem when in other classes.

16. Getting up early sucks.

Get used to it.

17. Drink water.

Even after band camp is over.

18. Use sunscreen.

Even on cloudy days. Cloud burn happens, people.

19. If you hate being sweaty, too bad.

There are hundreds of other people in the same boat as you. No one cares about how you look this week.

20. Have fun and enjoy your time.

This sounds cliche, but I'm serious. If you have a negative outlook on this one week, then how do you expect the rest of the season to go? Band camp is the beginning of a really awesome experience. Trust me, it's great.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
