Why Do I Support Interracial Relationships?

There's one thing that I do not like and that's racism. Racism has been around way before I was even born, but there's something about it that gets me stirred up every time. There are some people that were raised to think that everyone should stay in their race or that people should date the opposite sex, but that's not true. What people decide to do with their life shouldn't matter because they are not everyone else. This is why I support interracial relationships for that matter. I support that people don't care what race they are with because it shouldn't matter as long as the person makes you happy. There's this couple that everyone doesn't know about that paved the way for people like me who support interracial relationships. They are Richard and Mildred Loving. Richard and Mildred started off as friends, but Richard had a crush on Mildred. They started talking and going on dates, which happened to be against the law in Virginia at the time. Mildred became pregnant with their first child, and they were married. One night, someone tipped off the town's police department and they confronted the young couple in their home. They were appalled at what they had heard from the police. They weren't allowed to be married to each other because of their skin color. They were arrested and Richard was later freed that day, but Mildred spent nearly a year in jail. They went to court and were told that they could go to jail, but they had to leave town. They left town for a couple of years, but decided to come back to Virginia later on and got into trouble with the law again. Richard had the option to leave Mildred in exchange of not getting arrested again and they ran away once again. In 1967, they went to the Supreme Court and that was the beginning of people being able to be in any relationship that they pleased.

After the Loving's passed away, people everywhere took note that everyone should be able to date whoever they want, regardless of what race they are. Before you read this and judge me on what I like, just know that I do not hate my own race. The idea that a person of color who dates a white person is holding some kind of self-hatred is a far too simplistic one. No, black men and women who date or marry white partners are not necessarily doing so for status. There are a lot of reasons why people are attracted to other people of different races. At the end of the day, interracial dating doesn’t always have to be a big deal. Which is to say, questions like “What will your parents think?” or “What about raising your kids in two different cultures?” might be questions you think you should ask all the time, but not necessarily. The beauty in interracial relationships, and all relationships in general, is the opportunity to learn and grow from someone who might come from a different background and a different perspective for you.

So in fact, racism doesn't always have an impact on interracial relationships but they always tend to have the biggest impact on what people think about you. It's okay to try new things, and learn different cultures and backgrounds by dating outside your race. Also by the year of 2050, most new generations will be made by interracial couples and they will carry on the tradition of what their parents felt was right. If you ask me, that's pretty cool, and I can't wait to see other people see skin color the way I do-- this is why I support interracial relationships.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
