Let's be honest for a minute-- many of us tuned in to the Superbowl last Sunday to take part in watching everything but the actual football game. There is no shame in this, so many of us are guilty of conforming to this social norm once a year for various reasons. So whether it was Tom Brady's sweet, sweet face, or the inevitable brawl at the end that fancied you, I believe that we can all agree that Superbowl XLIX was a serious downer.
Starting at the end-- The brawl. What a sad display of sportsmanship that was demonstrated nationwide. Most people simply laughed at how childish these grown men were acting when faced with defeat.
The New England Patriots being accused of deflating the balls they used to play against the Colts. There are many speculations behind who was actually behind the deflation and the blame keeps switching between the two parties involved. This has become such a controversial topic mainly because the deflation of a ball makes it easier to handle, therefore giving an unfair advantage. With scandals within this controversy surfacing, such as video footage of an elderly Colts employee taking possession of the footballs for over a minute without reason leaking-- it's no surprise this whole ordeal has earned the name DeflateGate.
Nationwide did us wrong, basically by telling their hyped up on football audience to buy insurance because kids die. Ouch. At any other time that may have been a really effective commercial, but for an audience that has most likely been drinking for hours, this commercial did not effectively complete their "call-to-action" strategy.
Then we have commercials like the Bud Light one, where a man is promised everything and more if he wins a human pac-man game... the man continues on to win the strange game and is then rewarded with a bottle of Bud Light. I'm sorry, but a beer is not a reward, especially when it's Bud Light, and even more importantly because IT IS ONE SINGLE BEER.
I asked most of the people I was with on Sunday what team they were rooting for and got a surprising answer. While many of the people I was with had no real preference between the teams, when asked who they would prefer to win, majority answered Seahawks. People were rejecting the Patriots solely because they are frequent attendees in the Superbowl and the Seahawks were more of an underdog team-- a win for them would've been more meaningful.
Missy Elliot's comeback, while this wasn't at all a "sad" thing, tears of joy were definitely shed worldwide. After the Superbowl, the "Get Your Freak On" artist released a tweet that was shockingly true. The tweet stated that "the new kids think I'm a new artist & I'm bout 2blow up like Paul McCartney..." meaning that the kids of the new generation have never heard of her because her most famous tracks range from being 10 to 14 years old.
Katy Perry's halftime show was one for the books, whatever that means. Either way, it was awesome-- from riding in on a giant tiger, to her duet with Missy Elliot, the entire show was a success... but then the dancing sharks appeared and I was like "oh this is different," but was for some reason memorized by them. Then their mouths began to move along with the lyrics of the song and I was the most scared I have ever been during a football game.
Lastly, we are reminded that we still aren't dating Tom Brady.
