First and foremost, Fly Eagles Fly.
When the green confetti came raining down onto the field on Sunday night I finally knew it, the Philadelphia Eagles were Super Bowl Champions.
And it wasn't just any Super Bowl. It was against the Patriots. Our previous Super Bowl nemesis in 2004.
The script was set for Brady as well. A second-half comeback capped by a hail mary launch to the end zone. It all seemed just right. But then the ball hit the ground. And it was all over.
I couldn't believe my eyes when the clock hit triple zeros. After all this time of waiting, groaning, enduring "The Dream Team" hopes and downfalls in 2011, it was all finally over. No more Giants fans blabbering on about how they beat the GOAT in the Super Bowl. Guess what? We did it too. And with worse odds and an even more improbable run.
This wasn't supposed to be our year either. It seemed like a strike from the Fates themselves. Week 14. Carson Wentz goes down with an ACL injury. Our savior. Our Leader. Done for the year.
Now, we knew our defense was still rightfully feared, but our offense? There was no way it would ever be the same. I mean... we knew Nick Foles was talented.. but he couldn't lead us to a Super Bowl... right?? Wrong.
Nick Foles played with more calm and poise than I ever could have expected. Foles literally could not have performed better in this game. Doug Pederson and Nick Foles were seamlessly on the same page. The execution was nothing short of flawless. Let's all be real: Nick Foles and Doug Pederson's coaching staff deserve to have their praises sung. For a long time.
You could say our defense had a bad game. Unfortunately, at certain points during the game, I'd have to agree with you. But let's not forget how our defense was more than solid all season. Let's not forget who stepped up when Carson Wentz went down and Foles was getting adjusted again. That was our defense. And wouldn't you know it, when the game was on the line with Brady ready to mount that infamous comeback that would set Philly fans back down in the trenches, Brandon Graham's massive hand came flying in to strip sack Brady. Well, there it is again. Our defense to the rescue.
Sure, Brady played a good game. It's not like we didn't expect it. And I'm not here to disrespect the Patriots or Tom Brady. Whether we like it or not (I certainly do not), the Brady/Belichick/Kraft band are going to go down in history as one of the greatest dynasties in the history of football.
But hey, that makes the win that much sweeter.
And I'd like to bargain that this win is going to stay with every Eagles fan for a long, long time.
