The Denver Broncos won their third championship in franchise history last Sunday in Super Bowl 50, where they defeated the Carolina Panthers 24-10.
The game featured Bronco’s quarterback, Peyton Manning, and Panther’s quarterback the league’s MVP, Cam Newton.
While Denver’s offensive output was very low, their defense caused Carolina to commit four turnovers, and the defense had a direct hand in both of the team’s touchdowns.
A fumble recovery was made by Denver when Malik Johnson grabbed a loose ball that was stripped out of Newton’s hands by Bronco’s linebacker, Von Miller, in the end zone, earning Denver a touchdown. This resulted in an early 10-0 lead for the Broncos.
Miller sacked and stripped Newton again in the fourth quarter when they had a six-point lead and Carolina was deep in Denver territory. Miller gave the Bronco’s great field position that steered to a two-yard touchdown by Denver running back, C.J. Anderson.
Super Bowl 50 was the only game this season in which Newton did not score a touchdown. Denver’s defense sacked him seven times for 68 yards.
Miller completed the game with six tackles and two and a half sacks along with the two forced fumbles.
The Panther’s had an uncharacteristically slow start on Sunday, gaining merely 28 yards in the first quarter and only scoring seven points in the first half.
Prior to the Super Bowl, the Panther’s were scoring early on their opponents, especially in the playoffs. According to ESPN’s Bill Barnwell, the Panther’s win expectancy went from 54 percent to 26 percent after the first quarter.
The Broncos played with confidence after their defense got off to a fast start and were aggressive toward Newton along with the rest of the Panther’s offense.
Newton completed 18 out of 41 passes for 265 yards with an interception and no touchdowns. Following the Panther’s loss, he stormed out of the press conference after answering the media’s questions with one-worded responses and showing emotional distress.
Manning went 13-of-23 for 141 yards and an interception, navigated his team into the red zone three times resulting in nine points and held onto the ball for 27 minutes. Following his team’s victory, he made it unclear whether or not this would be his last season, which would ideally be a perfect end to his career.
