Hiking eight miles to the bottom of the Grand Canyon is an adventure unlike any other. The task of carrying a backpack containing all food, water, and clothing for multiple days should be thought over and prepared for thoroughly. This article's tips are geared toward hiking through the Havasupai reservation to reach Havasu Falls. However, there are multiple tips that pertain to other hikes as well!
Packing Your Bag
Packing a backpack containing all needed materials to survive off of for a multiple-day trip can be difficult. The biggest favor one can do for themselves is to pack light. This bag will be carried for a countless number of miles.
Consider a reusable water bottle with Aquatabs (water purification tablets) to reduce the amount of water needed to be carried at once, only take one additional pair of shoes that can be worn in water in addition to the shoes worn to hike in, and look at the weather to narrow down the minimal amount of clothing.
Food
Planning ahead to eat well while hiking is important. Although there is one restaurant in the Havasupai reservation, hours vary from day to day so food is never guaranteed.
With that in mind, purchasing a Jetboil is a great idea. Dry meals can be prepped before your trip and cooked on a Jetboil after water is added.
Socks
Having huge blisters is no way to hike miles upon miles.
Although having the proper hiking shoes is a big factor in this, the socks you wear play a role too. With that being said, sock selection is vital. It is best to avoid cotton socks. Ragg wool socks are typically the best for long hikes.
All in all, going to Havasu Falls is a life changing experience. Hopefully with some extra tips the hike is made easier!
