A Summer Well Spent: 10 Things To Accomplish

Ah, summer. The sun. The pool. Sunglasses, and a lot of sunscreen. While the summer is a perfect time to relax and recharge after a long school year, here are 10 things that you should do in order to make the most of your time off.

1. Explore your city.

Whether you're from the big city or a small town, there's always a new museum to visit or restaurant to try. No matter how boring a hometown might seem, the summer is a great opportunity to find new favorite places.

2. Spend a day on the water.

Swimming, boating, water skiing, fishing: You name it. Take advantage of the sunshine and get outside. While I look forward to taking our boat out each summer, do something that's fun for everyone.

3. Volunteer.

Volunteer at a summer camp. Donate time and money to those who are less fortunate. Walk dogs at the local animal shelter. While it's fun to relax during the summertime, we should not forget how fortunate we are all year round.

4. Revamp your style.

You're out of school. You're free to dress the way you want to. Why not try something new? From a new hair cut to a completely new wardrobe, summer is the perfect time to gain confidence and be yourself.

5. Read a great book.

I know you're tired of reading (or ignoring) all of the books you were assigned this year, but take the time to relax with a new piece of literature.

6. Exercise.

Whether we care to admit it or not, exercise does feel good. Don't let your school-year routines fly out the window. Work hard and feel good. While hours of Netflix and air conditioning are appealing (and necessary), exercise can do a lot of good too.

7. Maintain your friendships.

Introduce yourself to someone new, or reconnect with someone you lost touch with during the school year. Keep in touch with friends from other colleges. Spend time with the friends that mean the most to you, but don't forget to check in with those great friends you met in college.

8. Spend time with your family.

If you're a college student like me, you've probably been away from home for a while. Take time to show how much you appreciate getting to come home and spend time with the people you missed the most.

9. Go on a road trip.

Take the day off from work, gather up your closest friends and the fastest car, and get away. Drive up to your favorite vacation spot. Blast the radio. Take lots of pictures. Spend a worry-free day with your best friends no matter what the weather.

10. Try something new.

Make a list of all of the activities you want to accomplish this summer. They can be as simple or as extravagant as you want, but take the time to do something adventurous. It will be worth it.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
