As I begin my summer vacation, there are some things I want to do before I move back into my dorm in the fall. Growing up in the Bay Area, the following are on my bucket list for summer ‘16.
1. Beach day in Half Moon Bay.
It has been tradition to take a few days off in the summer to tan, play music, and get sandwiches to eat on the beach with my friends. Half Moon Bay can be windy, at times, but it’s a beautiful place to visit in the summer. There are so many beaches to choose from. I always make an effort to have a day strictly at the tide pools, where I can find sea anemones and starfish. Many beaches are also dog friendly, so it is always fun to take your dog for an adventure. There are paths and trails around a lot of beaches that lead up to marinas where boats sway by the aging docks.
2. Paint pottery.
A tradition I’ve had for years with my best friend from first grade is to paint pottery. On uncomfortably humid days, when you just want to stay indoors, making pottery is a great way to be creative. The pottery places are air conditioned, and a way for you to embrace your inner creative and artistic side.
3. Santa Cruz beach boardwalk
I remember in high school, going various times to the boardwalk. There are rides, arcades, a beach, and of course, the boardwalk. There’s so much to do and the summer weather makes you feel like it’s really time to relax and enjoy the sun.
4. Concerts.
Summertime is known for the variety of concerts and music festivals. Country concerts always fill up venues around the Bay Area. Rock, rap, hip-hop, pop, and alternative music is always available at various concerts around the area. Whether it’s at Shoreline, the Mountain Winery, The Fillmore, The Paramount, and so on, you know it is going to have an abundant turnout.
5. San Francisco.
We often take for granted how close we live to such a historic area and tourist attractions. There are so many unique places in the city to visit. From authentic restaurants to museums, the list goes on. You could walk the Golden Gate Bridge and get exercise while admiring the view. Attending Giants games at AT&T Park is always enjoyable to watch some baseball. If you need to fulfill your inner Carrie Bradshaw and shop away, Union Square is your perfect destination. If you have a sweet tooth, get sundaes at Ghirardelli Square. To appreciate boats and marine life, walk along the historic waterfront of Pier 39 in Fisherman’s Wharf while you’re enjoying authentic seafood.
6. Hiking.
If you are into exercising, hiking is always an amusing way to take time to appreciate nature, as well as talk to a friend or two. My favorite trail is Eaton Park, but others such as Edgewood Park, Mission Peak, Crestview, all have breathtaking views. (and not just because you’re winded from that uphill) Trails around Coyote Point in Burlingame and walks around Foster City are also beautiful.
7. Campingand fishing.
Not everyone is the outdoorsy type, but here’s an idea for those who are. Camping is always an adventure with family and friends. Most campgrounds have terrible cell reception, so it’s also a way to take a break from social media. Camping by a lake will allow for other opportunities for activities such as swimming, fishing, boating, etc.
8. Stick shift.
I have always wanted to learn how to drive a stick shift, so hopefully this summer it’ll finally happen. I want to enhance my driving experience and learn how so many people learned how to drive.
9. Drive-in movies.
Our parents and grandparents had the luxury of drive-in movies. How cool would it be to grab a group of friends and go to a drive in movie on a summer night when it is still warm enough to wear your shorts and sundresses. There are still drive-ins in San Jose, Milpitas, and Napa Valley.
