As a child, I remember going house to house in a ridiculous costume hoping to score candy from my neighbors. I did this not only to consume the Nerds and Snickers as I walked, but to totally engorge myself when I got home. I also remember hoping to never see candy again after eating too much of it (that wouldn't last long). I mean, go into any store in September or October, and you will be greeted with countless cheap Halloween decorations and aisles lined with nothing but large bags of candy. It's hard to not become a part of all the festivities when everyone else is doing it. Unless, of course, you realized just how bad for you candy is.
I know this won't make me the most popular guy on the block. After all, I'm stepping on a lot of toes here by essentially, up to this point, insinuating that we get rid of candy. But I promise you that it is for your health. Sugar has literally no benefit other than being in the best parts of your long-term memory. Sugar is just made up of empty calories, meaning it has no nutritious value, which also means that the only reason you eat it is because it makes you feel good, kind of like a drug.
Think about it. You know that drugs aren't good for you, but if you have a cigarette or alcohol habit, you know that despite the fact that you shouldn't smoke that cig or drink that brew, you really want to because of the way it makes you feel. This is exactly what sugar does to you. That good feeling it causes is the same one that any other addictive substance gives you, plus the high is short-lived so it won't be long before you want another one. Keep that in mind next time you really want whatever form of over-processed sugar that you call your guilty pleasure. But, if I have not already convinced you to drop that candy bar, then keep reading.
Like any other drug, there are benefits to quitting that you otherwise have missed out on. For males, reducing the amount of sugar you eat can actually bring your testosterone up, aka the hormone that makes you a man. Nobody wants low T, especially in your early 20s. For everyone, cutting out glucose can also mean clearer skin, reduced anxiety and also, the most obvious one, an easier time reducing your body fat.
Try it for a day, then a few days and then weeks. You may lose weight. You may finally get rid of your horrible depression. Or, maybe you'll just be happier knowing how much money you saved. Everyone wins, with the exception of whoever is the CEO of Nestle. He doesn't win.
