Hint: It's Not Your Fault

Why You Struggle To Be Healthy

Some of the most common New Year's resolutions relate to health and fitness. People set goals for themselves to work out more, lose weight and eat healthier.

However, the majority of people usually can't consistently commit to these changes, especially the change of eating a healthier diet. After a couple weeks, they find themselves yet again eating pizza, cookies, crackers or anything else unhealthy. BUT, don't beat yourself up -- this may not be your fault. Your inability to stick to a healthy diet may not be about willpower, but instead about your brain's unconscious obsession with and craving for processed foods. BUT, again, this is not your fault!

American food industries produce and sell food products by processing, refining and adding salts, sugars and fats, leaving consumers addicted to the products. 63% of the average American's diet consists of processed foods. We aren't just talking about Cheetos, Lays, Twinkies and Hershey's. The overwhelming majority of our food products have been refined and has had sugar, fat, salt and chemicals added to it. Yes, that means even the foods you have always considered healthy -- like salad dressing, yogurt, nuts and whole wheat bread -- have been refined and processed to include unnecessary yet addicting chemicals (like high fructose corn syrup), sugar, fat and salt. Be sure to read the ingredient labels on everything you buy! Our food has been manipulated by the food industries that produce them so that we are hooked and we can't resist buying and eating more.

Sugar is just as addictive as cocaine.

No wonder why we struggle to keep our resolution to eat healthier! Our brains have been hijacked by sugar, salt, fat and chemicals, leaving us craving and seeking foods that provide these addictive additives. Essentially, we have unknowingly and unintentionally abused our brains into addiction to unhealthy foods. Even though we consciously commit to eating healthier, we are unconsciously hooked on what's bad for us. BUT, there is hope! First off, now you are aware of your probable addiction to unhealthy foods. So, deciding to eat healthier is not necessarily a matter of willpower, but instead more of a matter of recovery. Resetting your brain from being hooked on unhealthy foods will require consciousness of your brain's relationship to unhealthy foods. This awareness will strengthen your commitment to a healthy diet and over time your brain will stop being obsessed with and stop craving unhealthy food.

May you have a healthy and happy year!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
