Oh, stress. Everyone has it, nobody likes to deal with it. Sometimes, stress is a healthy motivator, but other times it can become overwhelming. Studies show that stress can lead to increased risk of heart disease, obesity and depression. In today's society, stress plays an everyday factor in our lives. Between school or work, sports, activities, social life and family, the multitude of tasks that are required of us as people are often too much to be manageable. With that being said, here are the ways I best deal with stress…

Don't procrastinate.

Waiting till the last minute (even though we are all guilty of it) raises stress levels! Having to complete a task on limited time can make you feel rushed and worried. Planning ahead by taking on projects and tasks in sections ultimately eliminates procrastination.

Exercise.

Whether it's yoga, sports, dance, the gym or a walk around the neighborhood, exercise can help to get out negative energy and produce endorphins (the brain's natural pain killers) which, in turn, reduce stress.

Meditate.

To keep unavoidable stress under control, it helps me to take five minutes out of my day for myself. Meditation can be praying, listening to music, writing in a journal, doodling, etc. In the midst of a chaotic life, taking the time to relax is key.

Take a bath (or shower)!

My favorite way to de-stress is to take a bath or long shower. It’s a good place to reflect or collect your thoughts.

Make To-Do Lists.

Making a to-do list is crucial in order to organize the various tasks of a busy life. Whether it’s in my iPhone notes or on a piece of paper, writing down what I need to accomplish (and then checking it off when done) helps me to feel in control of my life.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
