The year is 2000, my family and I have just left our country and moved to the United States looking for a different life. Out of my 21 years alive, 16 of them have been lived in the sunny city of Los Angeles, California. I am one of many people that knows more history about a country that questions their right to be here rather than their own country.
Luckily, my family and I have always been here legally and haven’t had to struggle with thoughts of deportation or anything of the sort. Yet, there are many who have lived here longer than I have, feel devoted to the country which they now call home, yet still wake up every day with the fear that once their work day is over they’ll come home to find their family separated not knowing when they’ll be together again. Everyone has their own reasons to want to leave their home countries and risk their lives for a chance at a different lifestyle. What irks me, is people like Donald Trump, generalizing, demonizing, and marginalizing groups of people whose shoes he could never fill.
With the upcoming elections, and all the attention the Trump campaign has come to acquire, I’ll be the first to admit I’m frightened by what could happen to this country. Here, we have a guy that’s running for the most important job, with no background in politics, no true platform and he simply has no business in the world of politics. He grew up wealthy and then inherited a large sum of money which he refers to as if it were $5 that he managed to turn into a billion, and tries to make people think he’s had such a hard life. I’m sorry, are you trying to be the political pursuit of happiness? Cause it’s not working.
I’ve come to question the requirements of being able to run for president if this guy is allowed to get up there and talk straight out of his toupee. He is a businessman and an entertainer, not a politician. With all the brain power I can use up I still don’t understand how women have agreed to marry him, especially with his stance on women’s rights/ his idea of what women “should” be like.
Don’t get me wrong. I am totally critiquing Donald J. Trump and his followers. It’s come to a point where discussing his twisted political opinions is just not enough anymore. It’s as if we all have to stoop down to his level and explain things in a way he would so that whomever is considering voting for him will understand how much of a bad idea that is.
It truly makes me sad that there are still people out there who believe that immigrants -- whether they are from Latin America or the Middle East -- are a huge threat to life. These are people that use religion as an excuse to discriminate others, people who believe they are above the law. I know it’s been said before, but the country we have now was built by immigrants and the destruction of its native people. This country would not be what it is without the sweat and tears minorities and women have shed demanding equal rights. Voting for Trump would be like reversing our history books and making them pointless, they would be just pages in a book without any meaning whatsoever.
People have said that racism never ended, that Trump has only brought the racists out of the shadows. I guess this is true. What is worse, though, is that he actually could become the next president. This, of course, does not give him unlimited power -- that’s not how the government works -- but this does make the government mostly Republican. I’m not saying Republicans are bad, but something doesn’t seem right if the Republican Party is allowing Donald Trump to be their nominee. The Trump wagon is on a roll and seems unstoppable, but if there’s a possibility to stop not only him but also the uproar he has caused please don’t give up. #StopTrump2016. That’s one way to make America great again.
