Story Time: I Asked People About Their First Kiss

When you get older, you start to overlook the more innocent memories of your life. There is one moment that people almost always remember every detail of: your first kiss. I told six people my first kiss story, and asked them about theirs.

"I was in ninth grade, dating my neighbor. I liked him for like four years. At this point we were just holding hands and kissing each other on the cheek but even that was weird. He and my best friend were at my house hanging out, and he was getting ready to leave. Naturally, I walked him to the door...but I guess my best friend was getting ready to leave too? So, like, he was facing the door and I was facing him and he leaned in to KISS ME...but my best friend was right behind him, so we made straight eye contact. We were awkward freshmen, so she just looked like a deer in headlights. I thought he and I were going to get married...it was the most magical three months. Hilarious. To this day I still bring it up to my best friend, and we laugh about it."

1. "I was in my sophomore year of high school, and I was extremely nervous. Do you want to the details of exactly what I was thinking?"

Yes, if you don't mind.

"I was thinking about if I was doing it correctly... kinda weird but that's what was going through my mind. Her friends were trying to get us to kiss for the first time so we were in a room by ourselves. I liked it. It was the first hurdle I had to get over."

--Male, 19

2. "OK, well it was like 5,000 percent set up by our three mutual friends who were hanging out with us. We were in the basement watching movies. They had us sit next to each other (they took up all the space on the couch but the right side). It wasn't too awkward cause we had been talking beforehand for about a week and a half...but it felt very forced.

Halfway through the movie our three friends left the basement and went upstairs "to get snacks."
So as they went up he laughed 'cause he realized how obvious it was at this point, and then without warning kissed me. I was still confused but I let it happen, he was a nice kid. The three of them ran downstairs and asked if we kissed. He asked me out that night, and through the strange bewilderment, I still said yeah. But I had this giant pit in my stomach.

I was 15 and didn't know if I was ready for that kind of thing. But the feelings of being smitten took over my nervousness."

3. "I kissed this kid in kindergarten because we were planning on getting married."

--Female, 19

4. "Seventh grade, and I don't remember what I was thinking. So 12 or 13 years old... I do remember thinking after that it was great, he's still on my top three of best kissers."

--Female, 20

5. "It was literally just this one girl who I don't even know at this thing called 'Team Skate' when I was in sixth grade. This one was weird...just randomly kissed by some older girl. It was weird. But the kiss after that was with my girlfriend in sixth grade who I dated for like two weeks. We were in the auditorium for Sabres night, and someone was like, 'Kiss her, kiss her!' I was kind of nervous? But not really."

--Male, 19

6. "Mine was actually in the hallway of my middle school; I was holding hands with this guy and our friend said, "If you don't kiss her right now, I'm gonna punch you in the ovaries" ('Anchorman' reference). And then he kissed me, and it was so sloppy and quick because he like swung around so fast. And we were already a scandal because he was AN EIGHTH GRADER and I was a year younger."

--Female, 19

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
