Dear Odyssey Content Creators, Stop Writing Lazy — And I Do Mean Lazy — Articles

Is your three word article really something you're proud of?

So I've noticed a recent trend in Odyssey articles, and I'm totally not here for it. It seems a lot of creators have decided to adopt the same lazy writing format, which can basically be summarized as having a title such as "X Reasons Why (insert controversial opinion/topic here) Is Correct" and then the content of the article literally just being something like the words, "It's not."

Writing for Odyssey shouldn't be a chore, it shouldn't be something that you just want to get over with as quickly and easily as possible. Odyssey should be a place for you to have fun, a place for your writing skills to grow and expand as you share your voice with the world. I can promise you, writing three words per article will not help your writing grow, and also isn't all that fun to do. It's pretty apparent that the people writing these articles are doing it just to get in a quick and simple article to count towards their submissions for the month. Or wait, maybe they write those articles as a way of arguing against a point they don't believe in? Well, if it is a genuine attempt at an argument, that just makes it even lazier writing.

Have you ever had an argument with someone whose entire counter to anything you say to them is just that you're wrong and they're right? Not only is it infuriating, but it's also an incredibly ineffective way to argue. It presents no evidence as to why it is correct, does nothing to persuade the listener/reader, and ultimately just leaves those that agree feeling like they've wasted their time and those that disagree feeling frustrated. If you honestly wanted to argue a point you strongly believed in, this would be the last way you would go about it.

This whole writing format is really just like a bad joke, which also completely negates the argument that someone wrote it to be funny rather than as a serious article. It was funny the first time, the second time it may get have gotten a few chuckles, but any time after that it just became not funny, annoying, and overused.

Please Odyssey content creators, stop using this format. It's lazy, and I know you are all so much better than that. Write something that you can truly be proud of.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
