Why You Should Stop Worrying About What Other People Think

“You wouldn't worry so much about what others think of you if you realized how seldom they do.” ― Eleanor Roosevelt

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always worried about what other people think about me.

I’ve always been a people pleaser, and as I’m sure you can imagine, it’s a very unfulfilling habit. No matter what you do, there will always be someone who doesn't like it, doesn’t approve it, thinks it’s weird, or thinks it’s silly. It gets pretty exhausting when you’re always trying to make everyone happy.

In addition, people think about what you do a lot less than you think. We are all so hyper aware and hypercritical of ourselves that we assume everyone else will feel the same way.

More than 75% of the time, other people aren’t even paying attention. We tend to twist other people’s words and actions and make ourselves believe that they are saying negative about us or that they are judging us. While there obviously will be times in life where people are doing this, the vast majority of the time, they aren’t.

And, even if they are, why does it matter?

When I was in middle school and high school, I constantly worried about people thinking I was weird or too different. I tried my hardest to just fit in. Now in my twenties, I have learned to embrace my quirks and I’ve learned that if someone thinks negatively of me for just being myself, than I probably don’t want to be friends with them.

With more than 7 billion people on Earth, I assure you that there are much better people available to surround yourself with than people who don’t appreciate you.

We notice so many things about ourselves that others will never notice. From that out of place hair, to the new jeans size, to what brand of bag you’re carrying, to the slightly uneven makeup you have on, most of the time, no one will even notice. I’ve even noticed that on days where I thought everyone would think I looked bad, I’ve gotten compliments.

We see ourselves in such a different light than everyone else does, and I promise you that most of the time, people don’t have a negative opinion of you, and even if they do, their negative opinion shouldn’t dictate how you live your life.

We can’t make everyone happy, so let’s focus on making the most important person happy - ourselves.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
