No, this isn't about "the little things in life" like a cup of coffee with a friend or curling up with a book on a rainy day. I'm referring to those things in nature which are physically small—yet are still incredibly complex and deeply fascinating. And they're just plain fun to look at, to boot.
For example, I adore mushrooms. Do I understand them very well? No, but that doesn't stop me from crouching down for a closer look every time I see one. Mushrooms come in such a fantastic variety of shapes and colors and textures, and I can't help but wonder why. It's not like they're animals in which physical appearance attracts a mate. My theory is that this is simply God's creative hand at work—he loves beauty.
Each mushroom is different from the next, and each as chock-full of character as the other. They're just awesome little bundles of color and quirkiness!
What about a tiny pebble? Have you ever picked up a pebble and seen all the nooks and crannies on its surface? Try it sometime, and observe the multitude of hues and patterns crammed into one little chunk of rock. Even a seemingly dull gray pebble can be spectacular, if only your eyes are open to see it.
A picture is worth a thousand words, they say, so I won't even attempt to describe the beauty of this pebble. Just look at it. Better yet, go outdoors and find one for yourself!
Next time you're walking with your head down, don't let the incredible world of the ground pass by in blur. Observe the ground. What stands out to you? The picture below is just a sample of what I found in my backyard one day. See how many different things are on just one small patch of grass!
Feathers, leaves, a stick, moss, lichens... Each has its own wonderfully organized and fascinating structure. Wherever you go, you are bound to find something interesting to look at, as long as you have the right mindset.
If you have a magnifying glass, so much the better! You'll be able to see the details with clarity than ever, making a bit of moss look like some alien tree. If nothing else, take a gander at your fingerprints (guess what, they count as little things!) and follow the arches and whorls.
I never fail to be amazed by the complexity and beauty of nature, all designed by the omnipotent Creator who delights in each thing for its own sake. Every natural thing displays his glory, from rugged mountains down to the delicate pattern on the back of a leaf.
It's easy to be awestruck by something as grand as the ocean or the mountains, so I would like to challenge you to be filled with wonder by the little things. Take a break from whatever you're doing. Go outside and pick up a rock or a leaf or a seed, and appreciate the exquisite details in the tiniest of objects.
