Over the past few months I have realized how disconnected I have become from my friends and family when I simply text them. I miss notes of sarcasm, or funny double entendres, and I've grown tired of it. So what are the pros and cons of texting versus calling? What happens when you stop texting and start calling?
Pros:
1. Phone calls are more intimate.
Calling someone and listening to their voice while speaking to you can be an intimate experience. You hear the tone in their voice and can tell if they are happy, or sad, or angry. This brings something into a conversation that texting can't.
2.You connect with someone on a deeper level.
Listening to someone and being focused on what they are saying helps us connect with them on a deeper level. Not only are phone calls a way to become more intimate with someone, but they also allow for deeper conversations and thinking.
3. You understand sarcasm better.
Translating text into sarcasm can be difficult. When I just text my friends and I am sarcastic it can sometimes come off as egotistical or just plain mean. A phone call can usually fix that issue.
Cons:
1. You can't take back what you say.
Unlike text messages you can't hit the backspace button on your phone. Sometimes we can say the wrong thing, so you have to be more careful on a phone.
2. The connection can break up.
Phones can be pretty unreliable when you're trying to call someone. Texting can be easier because of the integration of wi-fi and instant messaging.
3. Sometimes the other person is busy.
We all live fairly bus lives, and phone calls can take time and effort that texting does not require. The immediacy of texting is a luxury that sometimes helps rather than hinders.
So whether you enjoy texting more than calling, or calling more than texting, one thing is for sure: there are different pros and cons to each case. Pick wisely.
